Ski Area To Change Its Name

Mrs Butterworth, beware. Cleveland Native Americans?

When Mrs. Butterworth is drained of her dark tan liquid, her ethnicity is clear to see.

Yeah. If they want to change it, that’s up to them. I guess the idea is that somebody who’s relative killed themself will have bad memories when they see or hear “suicide six”. If they really believe that, I guess they’re trying to do a nice thing. A cynic might suspect they’re just looking for a pat on the back but I assume they’re being sincere.

But will changing the name actually help anyone? I doubt it. I’d imagine people who have lost a loved one to Suicide are reminded of them hourly by a thousand little personal details more than just hearing the word. When they see the car the dead person drove or a headline about a team they followed. A coworker orders the same dish the departed liked, anything really….

Yeah, I’m not sure about the need for a name change. I guess I could go either way. Suicide is no doubt a terrible thing.

I live in Fishkill and years ago PETA sent a letter to our town asking for them to change the name. Kill is a Dutch word for stream, that is why we have Stonykill, Peekskill, Catskill and so on. It is a nod to our history and doesn’t advocate violence towards fish unless you’re a complete dipshit.

I remember that. Silly shit.
Barkeater is also considered by some to be a derogatory name to the indigenous of the Adirondacks.

The term that was used by one indigenous group to slur another translates roughly to “barkeater.” It was intended as an insult to indicate the offended party was not capable of fending for themselves as hunters, and were thus reduced to eating bark to subsist.

To be fair Barkeater Chocolate is very tasty.
