Old Forum Migration and Greatest Hits

One reason this transition has taken so long, and it has been years, is because we'd held out hope that we could migrate the old content from Nabble. Sadly, that has proven to be very difficult.

We had to make the jump to something new now, without a migration, because Nabble has indicated that the end is near.

There is still a slim chance we can figure out something. We found one of the old Nabble developers who, for a fee, is trying to stand the old forum up on another server, with the goal of writing some kind of forum importer.

We started this thread two years ago, because it is possible to "manually" move threads over to the new forum:

You may have noticed that some have been doing this in the TR forum.

The venerable Tales from the Hinterland, is going to present a challenge, because there is so much there.

If you want to move something from the Old Nabble forum to the new TR forum instructions are here:

Well, of course I would like to see the TFTH preserved for all eternity. If there is anything I can do to asist, let me know. If there is a Nabble death date, let me know so I can figure out a way to preserve some of the best reports offline.

I'm aware of the volume of effort in those links above.

To do this, manually, is hours of work. Each one of those thread is dozens of posts. Even if each post (not thread) only takes 5 minutes imagine he amount of time.

Plus the response are from many different members. Coordination

I have appreciated all your effort, but we're going to have to do some triage if we want to save some of it.

What you think about a single retrospective to encapsulate the best 2 or 3 posts from each season?

You'd have to compile the precise individual links.

Nabble has been threatening to quit for a long time, but this time it somehow feels more real. Parts of the old forum are breaking and no one is responding to requests to address the issues.

I have not taken this lightly. I am trying to get the old forum hosted on our own server and we also trying to get a former nabble employee to write a custom converter to bring the content over to the new forum. I personally don't know how to do this work, so my only option is to pay for this work. It isn't coming cheap, and the cost will be real even if, in the end, there is no successful result.

Fair enough, and we can't expect you to do all the work. How much time do I have before Nabble shuts down? I may at least download the "best of" for future reposting.

Though we can can all move on and start fresh. It was a good run while it lasted.

Nabble is saying "a few weeks." Not sure what that means.
