NYSB Silverton Event (?)

I have as ABasin season pass this year and hope to get in some high altitude turns, but you don't really acclimatize in a week or two, you just get used to feeling sluggish.

mm

Yeah, but, it's a start. One year I skied Loveland my first day and raced right up to Chair 9 that drops you off at over 13,000 on the ridge because the top had fresh windblown everywhere, and I was close to going to the ER that night.

Easing into high altitude hike to terrain is always a good thing for those who can make that happen! A few days might not prevent altitude issues for those who are prone to such things, but it would definitely make things a little easier overall...

Ok, perhaps 2021 isn’t the year (fuck you COVID)? No matter, planning is everything, and I have no problem targeting a trip even two seasons out!

Would anyone be interested in such a thing?
Never too early to plan a ski trip that involves more than one other person. :)

The good thing about trips where everyone plans their own travel is that those who have extra time or need more days to adjust to high altitude can arrive early and stay longer. I've been doing that for a few years when meeting up with younger ski buddies who are still working full-time.

In another season or two, I might be interested to join in with my ski buddy who lives in ABQ. I'd probably warm up at Purgatory. Late March would be good. We'd head to Alta afterwards.

Montezuma Bowl top is 13.5 and it's hiking from there. I've never had a problem with altitude(and I am sort of a flat lander)...Silverton is bucket list for me. If I can do it I am there

That would put us in unguided season, which with a group would be good! During unguided season you can always add a guide, which would open up more areas (even during unguided season there are areas exclusive to those with guides) and longer hikes...plus the local knowledge to make the most of the time. With a group the cost per person to add a guide might not be bad. Just a possibility, or not.
Yeah, I’d be into adding a guide for sure. I love being shown around a mountain by someone who knows it well

I’d love to meet up with y’all but I don’t drop that kind of coin unless it just dumped. It’s a quick 5 hour drive across Navajo land for us and we can book last minute and have free lodging with friends in Durango if all else fails.

Years ago, we spent 10 days in Colorado in the summer. Hiking at 12,000 feet wasn't easy, and I'd been at high altitude several times before. In the campground we stayed at, a couple was living in their motor home for 3 weeks to acclimatize for the Leadville 100. Must be nice.

I've lived in Frisco at around 9000 ft for three months, and never felt really comfortable with the altitude, even then. It improved a lot after a month. My buddy lives there full time, and it's an issue if I go out and visit, because he just rips and I can't keep up. Makes Whistler the best big mountain to visit in that respect, because the base is 2000 and tops out at 7000.

Silverton has slow groups for people not used to high elevation skiing/hiking.

The last time I was there there was a group of New York City boarders complaining loudly on the mountain side about the rocks they hit on their snowboards. I felt embarrassed for them. They were like odd fish flopping about out of the water, somehow surprised about thin cover in an alpine environment. But if those guys could get through a couple days there, you guys sure can!

who knows, maybe the stars will align and I can be there at the same time. I really want to get Cody there this season.

Good to know.

Have hiked up to the Ridge at Taos twice in the last couple years following an instructor. Definitely on the slow side due to the altitude. Both times I'd been in NM for a week before the snow was just right for untracked powder turns. Skiing down was a not an issue from a cardio standpoint. Have had enough powder days in recent years for it to be all fun and less worry. It was certainly worth the effort.
