NYSB Silverton Event (?)

Hey, enough NYSBers want to hit up Silverton, so who’s interested in making a NYSB event of it?

Ok, perhaps 2021 isn’t the year (fuck you COVID)? No matter, planning is everything, and I have no problem targeting a trip even two seasons out!

Would anyone be interested in such a thing?

Just to get the wheels turning in some heads....checking a random Wed-Sun in Feb 2021....United connects thru DEN to Durango, an hour and change to Silverton. A 7pm Wed night flight from Newark lands in Durango before midnight. Ski Thurs/Fri/Sat then take a 1:45 pm flight Sunday back to Newark. There are other options, but it’s doable. R/T fare for this Feb is less than $500.

That would put us in unguided season, which with a group would be good! During unguided season you can always add a guide, which would open up more areas (even during unguided season there are areas exclusive to those with guides) and longer hikes...plus the local knowledge to make the most of the time. With a group the cost per person to add a guide might not be bad. Just a possibility, or not.

Another cool possibility, although probably not necessary given the goods at Silverton Mountain proper, would be Silverton Powdercats. That would require a few hundo more per person than a day of skiing Silverton....but could be epic. Or not.

Fair warning. The base of Silverton is 10,400, and the chair drops you off at 12,300. Then theres hiking further up. I know there's comparable altitude numbers in Summit county, but Silverton is a whole other beast with no easy groomers to warm up on and acclimate.
I'd consider at least a few days to a week somewhere else in Colorado before Silverton to get the body ready for high altitude powder.

I have as ABasin season pass this year and hope to get in some high altitude turns, but you don't really acclimatize in a week or two, you just get used to feeling sluggish.

Warning noted! Personally, I don’t have the luxury to add acclimatizing days. I’m a long weekend warrior, and some of those trips have included hiking in Summit County at 13,000 ft and summiting Superior in Utah, along with numerous big backcountry days.....often the morning after I arrive (usually late) at my chosen lodging. Yes, sometimes a bit of a suffer-fest, but you do what you gotta do. So far I’ve avoided significant altitude issues...so far....knock on wood.
