NYSB Silverton Event (?)

If you have enough people you can basically have a private group anyways.

heck, it’s worth the trip just to experience the apres beers in the yurt after a day of skiing there.

Oh now you've done it . . . I've gone to look at the Silverton website. Will probably be a topic for discussion with my ski buddies who are willing to hike when we are together this season. :)

Can you hike out to this?

that’s the grande. There’s a unique facial entry on the viewers left fin I’d really like to get in good condition.

They hike up that during non guided season and do heli drops on it sometimes as well.

Fair warning. The base of Silverton is 10,400, and the chair drops you off at 12,300. Then theres hiking further up. I know there's comparable altitude numbers in Summit county, but Silverton is a whole other beast with no easy groomers to warm up on and acclimate.
I'd consider at least a few days to a week somewhere else in Colorado before Silverton to get the body ready for high altitude powder.
good to know. i stopped reading the brochure after it said "for experts only". sounds like the altitude will kick my ass after all. hard to prepare for that here in the NE

Start by going to Taos some day. Hike to the Ridge starts at around 10,000 and goes up about 1000 ft. Locals think of it as a 5-10 hike. I need 4-5 days to adjust to altitude and 20-30 minutes to hike.

Top of Kachina lift is just over 12,000. First trip there I went up with a ski buddy after being in NM for only 2 days. The short walk from the top of the lift to the peak where some flags are planted was tough. It would only take 5 min on any east coast mountain top. The 360º view was worth the effort. It was a season with lots of snow. Skiing down was well worth it since the bumps weren't huge and were nice and soft. Later in the week the lift wasn't running much due to wind or low visibility.
