NY Uphill or Alpine Touring Routes

As for Plattekill....when the snow is right I’m much more interested in heading right off the ridge to explore the back side and then skinning back up than I am in skinning up the resort. I’ve always been tempted but haven’t done it yet....

To any and all... make sure you know exactly what you are doing, or you go with someone who knows how to stay off private property, or you may get the whole thing shut down.

Noted. Between the Plattekill State Forest (NYS DEP) and the Plattekill Mountain Unit (NYC DEP) there is a lot of public land in the vicinity to potentially roam on, but one must make sure to stay on it. As you said, hooking up with someone in the know is best.

@JTG and I skied that side country once, freakin great day with Riley.

I got shot at that day by the owner of some of that private property.

Riley fast-talked our way out of it, and we bought the guy a couple beers in the bar after.

I think “I got shot at” is an exaggeration. I wasn’t there but I heard the story and it sounded more like an attention getter then attempted murder. Dude fired his gun near you.

That was a fun day, and an interesting interaction at the bar with the property owner at the end of the day. All was cool.

Of course that was out the ridge then left back towards Lower Meeker Hollow Rd and Thompson Farm. Definitely gotta be extra careful going that way! I believe there are effective ways, even without Reilly, to make sure you stay within the DEP Plattekill Mountain Unit if you go in that direction, but skier beware!

What I’m interested in is heading out the ridge and going right, dropping over the backside (those bike trails always want to pull me that way, but I resist) down into Plattekill State Forest land, toward Harold Roberts Road. There’s a window of State Forest land there that will keep you off private woods. I’d imagine the skiing in that direction has to be as good as on the other side of the ridge....maybe someday I’ll find out.

I forgot about the exaggeration police. In my country we call that "story telling." ?

Anyone use Altimeter+ for iPhone, or any other phone app that tracks altitude?

One (hopefully) effective method to make sure I stay on public lands and out of trouble venturing onto private property when navigating off the beaten path is to know and track where public lands fall on topographic maps. If you know that anything above a certain elevation falls within public lands....just don’t drop too low and you are good. In theory, at least. I don’t wear a watch so I’m looking for an accurate/effective phone app.

No offense guys, but I think we should keep private stashes...well, private. I have no issues with perhaps meeting up and doing it in person but Iet's leave them off the intenet.
