Mountain Safety and Avalanche Awareness

Reimbursement sounds better then punishment. Someone has to pay for it. From what I’ve seen in the Whites there is a thorough investigation of all involved parties. If you can’t afford your negligence then buy insurance. In Colorado it’s $3 per year, New Hampshire $35. You can also go global for $150. There’s also suffering, that’s free.
A small yearly fee for coverage is the best answer. It just has to be easy to purchase.

Best 2 common sense avalanche tips:

- Enter any skechy slopes one person at a time (or not at all is better). If there is an avalanche you will have a group of people looking for one person instead of 1 person looking for a group of people.

- Choose your route up just as carefully as you choose your route down.

I didn’t want to out-news anyone so I waited a week. Still managed to do it. New snow gets people in a frenzy. Sometimes it’s best to let things settle but that takes patience. Easier said than done. Entering closed areas can have serious consequences. Very unfortunate.

Damn, that’s huge. Persistent weak layers are scary! Catastrophic and unsurvivable if you are in the wrong place, wrong time. Fortunately nobody was caught in this one. I know not many of us are skiing Alaskan backcountry….but as we get into the heart of the season everyone be careful out there wherever you find yourself.
