Mountain Safety and Avalanche Awareness

Had one slide off a clients three story house. They have solar panels on a metal roof with snow guards that failed. It accumulated too much and released onto their second story deck which pushed a huge amount of snow and ice onto the ground below. By the time I heard it it was on top of me. Luckily I was in an excavator with a cab.

"The hunter from Lake Katrine sent a location pin drop, but did not trust the app to guide him out"

Any able bodied individual could spend an hour walking in any given direction in a straight line and made it out of Blue Stone Wild Forest. If these fools have cell reception and still can't make it out we are going to need a whole other thread titled "SOL" to call this bullshit out.

These dipshits asked for a “ride” off Marcy. God bless our Search and Rescue teams.
...rescued a trio of hikers who called for help from the summit of New York’s tallest mountain last week.
The three hikers reached the summit of Mount Marcy sometime before 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. At 4:50 p.m., they called DEC rangers and asked for a ride down, according to the DEC. Those rangers had a hard time finding the hikers, because the hikers weren’t able to properly read a map, the DEC said.
The hikers were wearing regular sneakers and complaining of frozen feet with at least eight inches of snow near the peak.

I guess the Thanksgiving menu and/or the folks invited to the dinner table wasn’t ideal.

Nice of them to blow up SAR’s dinner. Summit at dark in sneakers in snow? Can’t read a map? I know we are supposed to help people but do we really need to help all of them?

Have em do Community service hours in The Upstate.
Where & what?

"It was light when we started, how were we supposed to know it would get dark?"

The unfortunate part here is the brutal lack of preparation and general knowledge. They do not know what they do not know and they make no attempt to know.

Big kudos to the SAR people.

I'd never heard of the Blue Stone Wild Forest so I googled it. It's only 3000 acres, kinda crazy to get lost in that. That said, I've gotten twisted around before and I've come out exactly where I went in. Yep did a circle. It was a very uneasy feeling. Whenever I hunt the big woods (ADK) I always have a compass pinned to my vest.

Hey, I’ve been on the summit of Marcy a few times watching the sunset in sneakers too. When it’s F’N SUMMER! Maybe it helped that I had a map I could read.

I’m sorry but I have no patience for this. I know they are charging people for rescues in the Presidentials when it’s proven that they are ill equipped or unprepared. They should do the same here. Most of the SAR people are volunteers. They don’t deserve this. I hear these stories from them all the time.

Might need some help putting this in the mountain safety thread. Don’t want to off track Brownski’s ‘Where is Upstate?’. Which apparently, no one knows. Maybe SAR can find it.
