Which would you choose? Why? Would that answer change if you had to live there too?

BGM area is home and home to lake effects when the winds of winter blow from the Northwest.
The MSO area has Rocky Mountains, fine skiing and relatives.

Hmm, will have to think about that for a while if could ski ONLY in the one region. Would definitely change if I were going to live there full time as well. Be much more likely to be interested in skiing in one region but live there only during the extended ski season, say Nov-Apr or even Oct-May.

My primary ski buddy who is also from New York City settled in Albuquerque after college decades ago. Makes a good home base for driving trips to ski in the west, but I wouldn't want to be limited to the NM ski areas/resorts. At least would want to drive to ski in Colorado (GJT, PUB, BOU).

Here's a version of the NWS CWA that includes Alaska and Hawaii, but not the 3-letter codes.

If I could only ski in one zone it would be Reno (REV). Tons of choices and lots of snow (usually).

If I had to live in one zone year around I would have 3 choices: Reno, Spokane (OTX), or Pocatello (PIH).
Reno has the Lake Tahoe ski areas and the area just south of Carson City (Carson Valley) would be a great place to live. It has great moderate weather year around, although it is expensive.

Spokane has a ton of ski areas also that are close and is more affordable than the Carson Valley, but the weather is not as nice. There is also the Powder Highway in Canada.

Pocatello metro population is small (90K) it is a bit of a wild card, but it has a nice local area 20 minutes from town (Pebble Creek, 2200 vertical, 1100 acres, 225" of snow). Pocatello is centrally located to Grand Targhee (2:15), Jackson Hole (2:45), Snow Basin (2:10), Powder Mtn (2:20), Sun Valley (3:00), Big Sky (3:30) and a handful of smaller areas within an hour or so. The weather is ok and better than Spokane.

If I was choosing an Eastern zone, it would be a tossup between Albany, Portland, and Burlington leaning towards Portland.
