ICE v Electric: Cost and Emissions

Having just come back from Portugal I saw many electric cars. Gas is about $1.74Euro per liter which is about $7.40 per gallon, so I guess electric makes even more economic sense.

While there is a large percentage of Tesla, I saw Europe has many brands we don't have. One that caught my eye was BYD, a Chinese company. All electric, super high tech, really nice interior. Took a couple Bolt (Uber) rides in the Atos model (compact suv) and they were really nice. The drivers said they loved the car.

The Australians are well aware of BYD. Given the higher cost of cars in general because Australia is a limited market (far away, right-hand drive) there are many brands/models they can't get.

Having a RAV4 PHEV plus plenty of sunshine on a large south facing roof in central NC made it easy for my husband to justify adding solar when the roof had to be replaced. Now my daughter is living at home and driving the first RAV4 Prime for a daily commute of about 15 miles. Needless to say, she rarely needs to use gas.

When I'm home, I use my RAV4 Prime like an EV most of the time. Since we had put in a 240 outlet for another reason quite a while ago, only takes 2.5 hours for me to have a full charge for the few days I drive somewhere more than a few miles from the house.

Saw one in Netherlands last year. They look cool. Even before tariff wars, we have a prohibitive tariff against chinese EVs (50%?). If we didn't, even Tesla would be in trouble (not attacking or justifying, just saying). But I do think US tesla prices are higher because they are trying to compete in China.

I rode in a BYD in Mexico, but it was definitely a cheapo taxi model. Reminded me of one of those purpose built Nissan Taxis in the city, but all electric

Why would the state of NY want input from the guy with 82k miles on there 23 ev. 40k of those miles are traveling in the blue line.

What are you seeing on range degradation? I have 35k, 2.5 years, and it is like a bit less than 1 percent. You can see your usable battery in the ABRP app. I have like 130.2 usable kw on the original 131 kw 'large' pack from launch edition.

You can link your rivian in the phone app "ABRP" - a better route planner. When you link it up, it gives you real time data on your vehicle, including how much usable battery capacity you have. ABRP is a ev routing software. I think Rivian bought them at some point.

Rivian bought ABRP in 2023. A Swedish company called Iternio. ABRP stands for A Better Route Planner.
