ICE v Electric: Cost and Emissions

Finally took the Tesla on a road trip, though not far enough to need to Supercharge. The trip to Baltimore was ~190 miles representing ~60% of my battery. I charged it to 92% before I left and arrived with about 25%.

Did this trip again in 25 degree weather and took a 10% range hit. Still enough to not have to super charge. That about what you guys experience?

I'm not the guy to ask. If I started at 280 and had to go 190 miles I would be iffy if I make it.

I only have a PHEV RAV4 but the decrease in max charge in cold weather under 50 degrees, or under 20, is very noticeable. I started noting the temperature when I plug in at home, or wherever, in the last year or so. The max at optimal temps is about 48m EV when I'm home and using EV mode on city streets for several weeks in a row.

Recently spent a week staying at a house near Wolf Creek in Colorado and was charging overnight in a garage that had temps in the 40s. Max went down to 35m. When going uphill about 2000 ft for the 15 miles from the rental house in South Fork to WCSA, that used 25-30m EV. If I used HV (hybrid) mode going uphill, then I had more than enough EV miles to get back to the house at the end of the day, no matter how cold it was sitting in the parking lot. A couple days the air temp high around 15 degrees.

When I'm driving long distance, I don't worry about charging. Took the charging cord along because I knew I could charge in the garage (same house as last year) and was curious. The way the previous trips went, I wasn't as interested in experimenting.

In Queensbury - 220 miles, says 57 miles left (277), rain, 28-43 degrees. 3 percent above my epa. 65-75 mph. For those towing trucks some nice pull through chargers.

Note: I charged to 100 at home and set the heat and departure time to pre warm. Kept low defog at 70 degrees.

Dom - Thanks for the heads-up about those Rivian stations. Had a nice stop there on our way to Whiteface last weekend. I look forward to a day when all chargers have tap-to-pay and fully operational screens like these!

Also, if anyone visits Lake Placid there are some nice new 200kW ChargePoint stations at the Crowne Plaza that worked great.

Good stuff. Is WF your home mountain? Where about generally are you coming from? We are western LI.

Usually at Belle which is only 45 min from us up 28. Rain hit them hard a few days before we got there, but was still pretty fun!

Are there any hybrids that blow warm air from the gas engine onto the batteries to improve their performance in the cold?
