ICE v Electric: Cost and Emissions

More forbidden fruit. 500+ miles of range for 34K.

This guy is a shill. His credibility would improve if he lost the sunglasses. Come back to me after you've owned and driven one for a year.

On another note. The last time I was in China, around 2013 or 2014. A lot of their car manufacturing revolved around buying jigs from Audi, Peugeot and others for the previous generation design. @Campgottagopee might be able to help with the terminology here.

is there some wierd mandate?
It’s pretty weird to have rural districts, especially in cold places where folks lose the power grid, to mandate all school busses be ev.
Whatabout using hybrids?

It’s been a shitshow for some places.

Interesting . . . hybrid school buses were built in central NC. Started in 2009 but phased out by 2014.

Thomas Built Buses is based in Highpoint, NC. It's a division of Daimler Trucks North America, which also owns Freightliner. (I've been to the Freightliner manufacturing shop in Charlotte . . . long story.). Thomas was a family owned company from the early 1900s until the 1990s. Even after the acquisition by Freightliner, a Thomas was still President for another decade.

Oh, yes. Good ole NYS = zero common sense.

There isn't one community around these parts that's even close to being ready for this. Taxpayers are showing this with their votes. Myself included. One district was looking for a 10% increase. 10%!

"Hochul included a mandate in the 2022 budget that requires all new buses purchased to be zero-emission, electric buses by 2027. School districts are required to shift their entire fleet from diesel to electric school buses by July 2035.Feb 26, 2024"

I am pretty sure there is nowhere to actually buy said bus. Many BigCo's have orders for tesla semis. I imagine these would be comprable. I believe non delivered.

The one exception is you could shift suburban districts (big chunk of populace) to sometihing like a bunch of minubuses that look like the Rivian Amazon delivery van.

I am among the biggest EV fans on the board and I don't think hardcore, one-size fits all approaches work. For example, they could have, if they really wanted to, make this a mandate that would have basically affected the NYC, Albany, and Buffalo burbs, say within 60 miles of NYC and 10 for the others. Their just insn't the infrastructure for this where you live (I can get it right on major corridors but it involves some planning).

Spot on

I live close to Chapel Hill, the home of the Univ. of North Carolina. Apparently after having a number of hybrid buses, Chapel Hill Transit is moving towards EV buses. The fleet is almost 100 buses. So far they have 4 electric buses, with more on order. There are also BEVs used by supervisors.

" . . .
A goal of the Town of Chapel Hill and CHT is moving toward zero emissions. The Town embraces sustainability and has consistently led in exploring emissions reduction options. CHT was one of the systems in the state to integrate hybrid buses into a municipal fleet, having 29 hybrids at one time, making it the largest hybrid fleet in North Carolina. Lessons learned from introducing hybrid buses in the past, such as funding and maintenance, were applied in preparation for electric buses.
. . ."

For context . . . I remember when the town bus system was introduced in the late 1970s since I moved to CH in 1972. I thought it was pretty lame coming from Manhattan, but did take it to classes at times as an undergrad and grad student. The bus system has been free for the last 20 years, with UNC and the UNC Medical Center helping with funding. UNC-CH supported the bus system from the start. Chapel Hill is a college town with a population of about 62,000. The student population is about 30,000 during the school year (Aug-May). Neighboring Carrboro has about 25,000 people. Takes about 20 min to drive from one side of Chapel HIll/Carrboro to another in any direction, assuming not stuck in traffic after a football or basketball game.
