Hometown USA: Glens Falls, NY

Ugh Florida ' god's waitingroom , where the talk around the pool is who friggen died last nite or who lost a major body part ..this disgusted me at my dad's gated golf community . Place was full of assholes who were Garbage Nazi's. lawn Nazi's Flower Nazi's , full of overly nervous supercilious dipshits . He hated it and really missed CNY .

Eff that i want to live with a diverse age group , i want to see mountains and lakes not some fucking flat , humid, fire ant and love bug infested shithole full of wrinkled ,old crotchety Qtips??
Warp, I laughed out loud at this. Sounds just like something my father could have said. Only he would have added, " All you ever hear about from those old farts is all their aches and pains and what pills they're taking!"

People get so worked up over that shit. The only thing that comes into my mind when I see a confederate flag is the general lee. I would venture to guess the numchucks that fly them have no idea the significance and the dimwits that get their panty in a bunch have no idea either.
There's a great book about people indentifying with the confederacy and the flag. It's really a pretty humorous and somewhat sad read at the same time.Confederates in the Attic

Guys, since we are drifting, what ever happened to Z. Harv, you know? Glad to see Sno back on.

Back on track, duckbutter, lots of these decisions seem hard (and to an extent they are) but the fact you are thinking about alternatives suggests to me you will be happy wherever. I also echo the point that your point that kids will be a natural intro to others.

As adults, we went from Brooklyn (still the longest place I have lived for 9 years, loved it, at coming upon 41), to far out Suffolk NYC sub/exurb to near-in Nassau suburb. We're happy, and we have an almost 10 and a 7 year old. We moved from Suffolk (ironically) because my commute was too long. Ironic because I have been remote work since March. (I know Long Island is not on the map for you, and not suggesting it; just highlighting the number of moves we've made to say it will be fine and great wherever you go).

I think a lot of adults find it hard to make new adult friends before their kids are 3-5; Kindegarden (sp?) makes it very natural. You may become friends with people that you would have picked out in your pre-kid life, and you may become friends out of default, but either way it is a happy event.

Also on fear of picking the wrong place, normal to be fearful, but only in foresight. Suffolk was wrong (at the time) for what I do as a profession, and we moved when my older one was going into 1st grade. He is more shy than younger one, but loves school, has friends, including a close one that lives about 150 feet away on a straight line, and is well adjusted. I would recommend trying to pick a place before K, but it is very doable to move again after that. I would, of course, avoid serially moving. Even if our current house gets too small for us, I don't want to move again until the kids are in college (a mountain place is another story : ) ).

I believe that Z, Pee Tex & ML all left for various reasons related to politics though I certainly wouldn’t speak for them.

ML told me he would be back in 4 years so I'm holding him to it. Where are you!????? LOL

I always liked that guy --- has s great sense of humor

Thanks, Brown!

I try to avoid politics generally, and here, but since the confederate flag has come up, for people who refer to that symbol, I urge you to read two books: The Great Migration (which won the Pulitzer last year or the year before) and the one volume popular biography of Grant that came out in the past +/- 10-15 years.

Grant's predecessor, Johnson, was the first impeached president, and the first president not to attend his successors inauguration (excepting a father-son duo with the last name "Adams").

Old Harv was making his first tentative post covid turns and got a heads up from Broski that I needed to lock this thread. Haven't read it, got some more skiing to do.

New rule, you guys behave while I am skiing. I will read it later.

Hey Duck, while we go house hunting, look over our tax bills and discuss the merits of moving to warm places can you tell us what work you are into? Maybe we can find you a job or at least share many opinions about one if and when you get here.
Thanks. That's really nice. Actually, I have a gig lined up and it sounds like it could be a good fit. I just get cold feet sometimes when I think about lifestyle stuff... speed traps, rain in February, parking tickets, poison ivy, singletrack covered with slick roots, vinyl siding, cologne, biting/stinging insects, reliance on snowmaking, tolls, lack of bike lanes, etc. in addition to taxes and weather as you mentioned ;) That's all tongue in cheek stuff. I'm pretty easy going.

Thanks. We had kids late. In a big city or mountain town this may be the norm. In red'er and rural'er places people in the same stage of parenthood as I could be my kids. It's all good.

This is our goal and why I'm putting a lot of pressure on the decision. We could give it two years and still move again before Kindergarten but at some point it needs to stop. We want to settle and become part of a community and stop looking over the fence. Thanks for the input

I was gonna reply but Harvey gave this thread a timeout. First flew in to Memphis around the same time Jackie O and others were flyin out from Elvis’s funeral. Was headed to grad school at Ole Miss. Wasn’t concerned about flags just wanted to learn about natural products and U of Miss had and has one of the best programs in the world for it. Now they have a Magnolia flower on their new state flag. First project I worker on was extracting cytotoxic compound(s) from Magnolia tree roots. Mississippi also had the flower on the license plates at the time. We found a new compound and name it Magnolialide. Thanks for opening up the thread again Harvey and allowing me to share that tidbit. Might have to get the new flag and fly it proudly. They sold t-shirts in the bookstore saying “Ski Mississippi” with a skier cruising through the woods. I bought one.
