Helmets bro!

I never wore a helmet till about 15 years ago . Standing by three of my then small children a new rider was pushed by her boyfriend . She had just enough control to punt me instead of any of my children ,all wearing helmets. The next week I started wearing one.
On warm days in the Spring , when slopes become empty, I go helmet less.
When I decided it was time for my then 6yo to get a helmet, essentially had to buy one for myself to be a good role model. She started long enough ago that helmets weren't yet required at the ski school even for kids. By then she was skiing blacks in the southeast.

We went shopping during late season sales. That's when I discovered a helmet in 2006 was far more comfortable for me than any hat. Much warmer too. More importantly for someone skiing in the southeast, I didn't care as much if the snow guns were on during early season.

I need to wear goggles to keep my eyes from watering, even on a small hill in warmish weather. So that also is a reason that a helmet is more comfortable.

As for bike riding . . . a helmet only for longer rides. I'm not a mountain biker but will ride easy trails. No helmet around the neighborhood. Especially in warm weather.

Everyone saying: “I wear a helmet sometimes but not other times” should admit to themselves that helmets aren’t that important to them.
Way to completely discount the idea that science and society can learn and make useful improvements to the way life is lived. So long as you equate “wearing a helmet” to “everyone getting a trophy” (that comparison is ridiculous btw) I’ll go back to avoiding any and all discussion with you. Yes, I know that will make you as happy as it will make me.
You are very easily triggered. That’s a character flaw and you should work on that.

this thread reminds though, i need a new helmet to replace my giro fuse that's probably 7+ years old now.
I'm a big head sweater, any suggestions for a well ventilated helmet for a peanut head? Looking at giro 9 and smith mission...
Do you want a visor or not? MIPS or not worth the extra money?

Umm....in case you missed it I’m the one who pointed out that I am entirely inconsistent. I, myself, do not fully give helmets the importance they deserve. That’s stupid, yes. As such, I deserve whatever head injuries I sustain as a result.

Yes, my lack of patience for nonsense is a bit of a character flaw.

I was prepared to rip into that article you linked, but I thought I’d clarify what you were trying to say before I did.....so I’m learning. Trying at least.

Of course you failed to clarify what it is you were trying to say with that one.....surprise, surprise. :p

I’m sorry that my posts don’t say exactly what you want them to say.

That must be difficult for you. You are a very sensitive little boy and your feelings are very fragile.

Your post with that link didn’t SAY anything. It was quite useless, honestly.

Of course, MC, I just failed at avoiding any and all discussion with you. Bad Jump Turn Guy, bad! I’ll work on that, too.

I’m now giving Ignore mode a try, that should help!

sometimes i sense alot of lighthearted and carefree tension between you two...

I think the comparison of the arguments is in that they alter reality. Wearing a helmet can give some a false sense of security, in the same way that your insurance company says, "a large SUV gives a driver the impression of safety, so no, we're not lowering your premiums."

I don’t know, maybe something can be made regarding your ski helmet and car insurance analogy. However, that doesn’t lend any validity to MC’s ski helmet and everyone gets a trophy analogy. Ski helmets alter reality, they objectively make skiing safer. How much safer can be debated, but studies suggest they make it safer. Giving everyone a trophy doesn’t alter reality, it doesn’t make kids any better at the thing they are getting the trophy for. Seriously, if I were to call MC’s comparison stupid would be an insult to stupid.

By this rationale, if participation trophies actually did do some good (increase kids’ confidence, make kids more likely to stick with a sport so they can get better, etc.) then JTG wouldn’t have a problem with them?
