Gore Mountain Conditions

If it is a simple matter of not enough boots on the ground then there’s not much to say. Recruiting has their work cut out for them this summer.

They’d be way worse off if they didn’t know their own system.
Did they enlarge the reservoir wet well when they expanded the reservoir and the pumping systems? I’ve heard rumor they are pulling in silt which if true would compound their issues. If they are understaffed, why aren’t the advertising? Remember there’s not allot of people available near gore and unemployment is at historic lows. They need to pay snowmakers more.

ORDA loves to build stuff at Gore but does not seem to want to operate the stuff they build. Here we are in mid January, and, right on schedule, the barely used Burnt Ridge HSQ is not operating in its 17th year since it was installed. What a joke. I see the Ski Bowl remains closed for business.
Couldn't have said it any better myself. Perfectly describes Gore over the last 17 years.

I thought Gore did a decent job last year, but the other two ski areas I visit most often are Killington and Whiteface, and last year, both put out their worst seasonal efforts in my season pass history. I think that made Gore look good in comparison. Since they are performing better this year, Gore now looks worse.

If you want (or need) foreign visa workers you need organized housing and transportation for them. Dormitory style housing ? Transportation shuttles? Whiteface, because of Lake Placid, has an abundance of workers. I was at Whiteface on Friday, I swear a third of the worker all came from the same foreign village. BTW They were smiling, willing workers. I am sure housing and transportation were arranged long before they arrived. From my Cape Cod experience I know it is not unusual for the foreign visa workers to work two jobs... day job, night job. Gore simply can not presently attract those workers. Even a 25% jump in wages, or a bonus to sign up will not solve the problem.
My solution to snow making? Do a honest evaluation of where snowmaking is most beneficial and efficient. It could very well mean scaling back expectations. Smaller mountains rock snowmaking because they have less terrain to manage. But that same drawback of less terrain means those trails are high quality. At this point I wonder if a 12 or even 18 inch dump of snow could meet the expectations of some? In the meantime I will alternate Gore and Whiteface, and throw in an occasional morning or night trip to West.

Unfortunately, the summit trails need a lot more than a foot of natural snow to open…

Rode up the triple at Lab yesterday with someone who’s been going to Gore ever since the red Gondi was spinning. He said his friends went up for a planned couple days but when the only way outta the base was Sunway they made a few runs and left for whiter pastures...

Yesterday was my best day of the year at Gore.
Today Whiteface has better coverage and better and more terrain. Everything is better at WF. It was definitely worth the extra drive.
