Fast Tracks: Paying to Cut the Line

There's a scene from Seinfeld involving George Costanza that I wish I could post, but, can't

You guys spend $1,000??? approximately for a set of skis and boots? Some of you have a couple different pairs. Rest of the gear cost you at least $500 minimum to be able to get you out on the slopes. Some of you have multiple season passes. Cost of driving to and from or staying a night or a weekend, not to mention the value of your time to get there and back. Considering the amount you already have sunk into the sport I would hardly consider the extra $50 for an express line to be a burdensome expense for most of you. Even if someone did use it for 10 different Saturdays its an extra $500 for the season. From what I can tell that brings the cost of the season pass back to where it was about 5 years ago before the megapasses made it all cheaper. As far as who will use it, its like anything else; if you value your time skiing instead of waiting then its not a big outlay for something you enjoy. People are free to spend their money on whatever they see value in. It doesn't mean their rich or some kind of a jerk.

… just a snake.

There is no question in my mind, that, for reasons I don't understand, the price of a lift ticket matters WAY more to skiers than the price of gas, tolls, gear, beer and all of it. I'm not sure why. But it's true.

It doesn't make the person in the fastpass line a jerk.

Everybody claims to be a capitalist, until capitalism does something they don't like.

Pure capitalism: Not anarchy, just profit above all else.

Wiki: "an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit"

To be fair very few claim to be a true capitalist. US is consider a mixed economy, not capitalism.

Yep, even more true for people who pay for plane tickets for a family of 4 for a school break ski trip once a year who also can use a multi-resort pass for local turns. Plane tickets over holiday periods are very expensive, can be twice as much as during Christmas week. One reason I took my daughter to ski at Alta during spring break in April, no matter how late it was.

I know someone who lives in NC who plans to take his kids to Colorado using Ikon over one of the holiday long weekends. The family has skied enough in the southeast to be at least advanced intermediate, if not low advanced. They use Ikon at Snowshoe. They have done ski trips flying to SLC. The fact that Copper has the option of Fast Tracks, as compared to Winter Park, could be a factor in deciding which resort to check out for the first time. They have Ikon Base, so Steamboat is blacked out.

In short, three destination resorts on Ikon where people can fly into Denver with three very different approaches to a holiday period when families typically fill slopeside lodging.
