Big Tupper Thread

a)Start small with a tractor powered rope tow.

b)Maybe ORDA could throw Tupper a bone and let it be focused on Skimo as their other bumps are obviously not focused on it.

Theoretically, if you are going to create a new ski area in NY (a bit nuts imo) it should be in a favored spot for snow.

Beyond sentimental motivation, the reasons to revive an old ski areas vs build a new one include taking advantage of any remaining infrastructure. But by now, BT is really just a trail map. I'd bet it's grown in to a significant degree. Is the lodge still there? I'd be surprised if the building was worth saving at this point. It was brutal when I was there in 2011.

That part of NY needs something to drive the economy. Just not sure if skiing is the best choice. I like the ropetow idea. Maybe more of a poma disk. Just maintain one pod with no flat spots? You'd still need millions in snowmaking.

Full Disclosure: I'd want BT back as much as anyone. I have hiked and toured it more than once, but never skied it.

Big Tupper view

Ski gloves are too damn expensive for rope tow use. Poma or T Bar is the way.

The only thought I have in their favor is that there's a growing market that's looking for a more affordable and low key sort of ski experience. Maybe that could be a thing for BT, maybe not. F if I know.

I use the phrase 'rope tow' to mean surface lift. I agree actual rope tows suck.

Are there enough skimo enthusiasts to support it? I have no idea how big that community is.

In the spring I tried running to the alpine hill from the xc trails. Went the wrong way on an aborted bushwhack. I might try to get back there to see what condition the lodge is in.
