Belleayre Conditions

Very sunny and busy day today. Warmer this morning at Lift 8 by 10 degrees than in Arksville , on the drive up.
Lower Tongora, fun for a couple runs.
Ski partner, son Derek came out again, so had a blast .
These holidays add a little lifeline entertainment . Rode the Lightning quad once and got entertained. Watched the Bell lefties working hard dragging the pole less and slow people up to the lift loading zone. They have given up on the loading carpet, on busy days!

Were you at the bar talking about Catskill mountain spring water?

Wintry mix all day up top with fog shrouding the headwalls. Super sticky icky gave way to middle fast frozen which transitioned to lower slush puppy. Skate on Quad and walk on Gondola the whole time. Went lookers left to right in the morning, had some lunch and then worked right to left. Never got to the very middle.

Belleayre gets knocked for having many similar runs and being flat and boring. On a day like today, when you have the place to yourself, you can really haul ass carving the whole trail and ski different combinations. This place keeps surprising. Sure, they had grabby snow up high where your edges were faster than your bases. You couldn’t get any speed for Roaring Brook or Upper Deer Run. They can’t control that. What they have controlled is 80% of the mountain with snow wall to wall. There was only one brown spot somewhere that I flew right over. Peekamoose might be my new favorite. Lower Wanatuska and the other mid mountain blues are riddled with some cool rolly pollies and it was fun following the natural terrain features. A lot of that gets lost with a deeper base and groomers taking out the peaks and valleys. They didn’t touch Tongora which turned into a surprise bump adventure.

The best part of my day was skiing with my old friend Sickman. We grew up down the road from each other and I’ve known him since elementary school. We moved to Big Sky together with another friend in 1996. Sickman stayed in Montana for 6 years and we spent one summer together in Cooke City. Since moving back to NY he has only skied a handful of days. He recently told me that he just got a new snowboard and wanted to get back into it. We made turns again today for the first time in 20 years. We picked up right where we left off.

Belle #16 today (8:40 - 1). An inch or so over frozen corduroy. Pretty good size crowd but nothing crazy. #7 was just about ski on most of the day.
