Bad Wipeout

Scene safety is a concept lost with so many people. We just had to tell the neighbor that they shouldn't park so close to being under the buildings overhang because of the giant icicles that were going to fall onto their car.
This was the view from my office window to the building next door a few years ago ...

We set up a webcam to see if we could capture the fall ... And we did!!! I only have the video locally so I can't attach it, but it's pretty funny to watch!

Fortunately for the owner of the car, the snow that fell was soft ... It just hit the back of the car and broke apart ... It didn't look like it did any damage!

Danger danger! That’s a pretty good sized cornice, they got lucky.

Right on RA that line of resting boarders at the lip,of a drop is a concern .

One time i was coming down a headwall and noticed two things there was a line of sitting boarders up ahead and a young boarder coming down the drop obviously not aware of others on the slope ,so i moved extreme skiers left and there was a drop off a gully thereand the line of sitting boarders was ahead from centrr to the right

I gave him a wide berth but i couldnt get any farther out of his way , yet he inadvertently swerved right into me . The impact broke my binding and the yoho freaking never stopped after the impact pissed me . Luckily the mountain let me use their skis at no cost to make up for the incident which others saw .
People that don’t stop after hitting someone are real a-holes

Mine was a morning at Sugarloaf about 15 years ago. Few turns onto Gondi Line below the X-Cut lost the edge and
slid fast and uncontrollably toward the tree line. Figure it was about a +/- 75 yard slide, digging my skis in as much as I could to try to scrub speed. Came to a stop right at the tree edge. Miraculous. Went straight to The Bag and opened the place up with a beer @ 930a or something. Trail was officially roped off shortly thereafter. Heart racing today just remembering it...

Saw that. Heart goes out seeing stuff like that. Of all the years (with COVID and more people entering the backcountry) to have a sketchy snowpack. Much of the west is suffering with a PWL. In Utah there were 70 reported avalanches from last Friday to Tuesday. 70! A guy died on Square Top. You expect the potential for issues in the backcountry, but this shit was inbounds at Snowbird, in a zone that was open.

Obviously it’s not just Utah. As tempting as it is to get out sometimes, the skins need to stay in the closet for a while, at least for me.
