Avalanche

Scary stuff, glad you are relatively unscathed.

I’m sure something like that takes time to process. As RA asked….lessons learned are an important thing. When/if you feel you can, it would be interesting to know the details. Avy forecast, your observations, how you approached snow safety….stuff like that. Also interested to know how/if you think this experience might shape your future trips to the backcountry.

Hmmm, what did I learn?
When I Iook back at the decisions we made that day I would say that I was lazy. We have skied that bowl probably 40 times this season. We became complacent. I knew there was a bad layer of ice going on and I went anyway. We are having a shitty season and I wanted to ski something fresh. Bad decision making.
My buddies went out yesterday for the autopsy. The are two bigger rock piles uphill of my friend in the picture. I was skiing directly above them. I slid on my fist, elbow and hip hitting rocks all the way until I hit the smaller rock pile just above the darker rock pile. I caught air and stuck next to the darker pile. They got 8” overnight that is covering the whole scene.

Here it is

Thats why I always wear a transceiver inbounds as well as probe and shovel on side country.

Heuristic traps are the most dangerous.
Just because it was awesome yesterday doesn't mean it's safe today.
Glad you make it out

Oof. You must be pretty darn beat up. Sorry man.

So maybe a bit of scarcity heuristic trap? I think that’s one, maybe it had a different name but you get the idea.
