Gore Mountain Conditions

I meant the weather pattern, but don’t disagree about snowmaking expectations.

Not a fair comparison
In what way? Belleayre had a complete melt out of natural snow Xmas week but they still came back. Gore showed this week that they have the capacity to cover the whole mountain in a short time. Killington is bigger than Gore and opens more earlier. Why should we expect to wait till February to ski Rumor when there is good snowmaking weather for weeks?

Gore has three times as much terrain as Belleayre spread out over four mountains. Belleayre’s trails are close together along a single face. Apples and oranges.

While you guys debate snowmaking... I have a racing question. Today was the first day I saw a number of skiers in obvious racing gear complete with bibs. The bibs I saw said Gore and Sports Page... Is this organized racing between clubs or mountains? I saw zero school buses so I assume it was not school competition. I know from the Snow Report they race on Echo trail. If I was to trek over there past the ADK Express Lift would I see racing and times posted? Is it actual competition or more of a beat your own personal best type racing? West Mt puts quite an emphasis on racing. Front and center in front of the lodge. Complete with camera coverage and announcing. Pretty sure they have an informal Sunday morning college competition as well. Of course it takes up a third of the Face and adds to the congestion which does spur some complaints.

Most of Gore's races are organized by NYSEF. I believe ones that aren't are organized directly by ORDA. The names on the bibs are most likely just sponsors and have no bearing on who is competing.

The racers that were at Gore this week were members of PARA (Pennsylvania Area Racing Association) and they were conducting a Super G speed camp. The bibs the kids wear were originally provided by Sports Page and Inside Edge, which are the 2 ski shops in Glens Falls.
Most other races are NYSEF or FIS events.

These were athletes from the Pennsylvania racing conference running a sanctioned super g race, which they likely can't do on the hills down south, since there isn't enough vertical.

Although it stinks that Echo is often closed for racing, it's an amazing slope that racers of all ages will travel far to race on at Gore. The solution to this, of course, would be to make one more trail on Burnt Ridge, feeding back to the base, as has been discussed and is, I believe, approved. But this, of course, would cut through Cirque Glades, just as Backwoods cut through Barkeater. That said, I'm a fan of Backwoods, as well as the ability to ski in and out of Barkeater now, dipping my toes into the glades rather than fully committing. I suspect something similar would happen with Cirque, if a trail were to be cut there, and it now seems that Gore has proven that it can maximize snow making, albeit under some duress, and could handle an additional trail to the snowmaking energy and water load (if not labor). However, Cirque is an experience, and would certainly be missed were that ever to happen....

A trail through Cirque to the base would still need to cross Echo, so that doesn’t solve the problem unless you restrict racing to above Twisters Sister. Putting racing on Sagamore or even Showcase would work but I don’t know if they could have homologated course. I’m sure NYSEF would object to any change.

There’s no perfect way to manage Gore. It’s way too spread out and poorly connected. You just gotta learn to skate better.
