Wild Harvest

Yo Rip

When should I start looking for fiddleheads? Will all this rain help or hurt them this year. I really like those things. Sauteed in butter, salt, and black pepper. Yum!
Should have included theses pic. This is also from ireland

They are favoring Hickory trees so far.
All kinds of funky looking Fungi with all the moisture. Found some Coral mushrooms but I’m passing on them. Also a weird black and white furry type that I have never seen before.

I’ll eat the chanterelles but not the ghost pipes. 4” of rain yesterday brought out some more interesting mushrooms but I’ll stick to the amateur varieties .

Cool fact about ghost pipes is that they are not mushrooms. They are a chlorophyll-less perennial plant. They are parasitic with fungi that grow symbiotically with tree roots. They get their energy from the host tree that absorbs the sunlight which is why they are able to grow in the dark forest.

Golden chanterelles are really starting to pop here in the LoHud. Found under Beech today where a steep bank erodes near water.

Jealous the chanterelles I’ve been seeing are pretty small.

I hit the golden oyster jackpot though. Probably 10lbs from one tree .

Still going, quite a season for mushrooms. Picked 20lbs of golden oysters in two weeks off one dead tree.
Found another patch of monster chanterelles.

In three weeks people will be saying it’s dry and we really need rain 🙃

This one had 5 puffballs, Calvatia cyathiformis, on it.
