Wild Harvest

Those don't look like the fun ones. Are they?
Haha, no. It’s a maitake. Also known as hen of the woods.
Party at Ripitz 🍻
You guys can keep the magic ones. Those things make me feel like a squirrel is running around my stomach. My last experience I tried to let it out and thought my entire body was going to go out my rear end. I imagined myself turned inside out and was frightened for the person who would find me that way. This all happened while sitting on the privy at Marcy Dam on our way up Mount Marcy to ski down on XC skis. Not good.

as a chef, i am so interested and love wild mushrooms.. What type is this ? woods ear? I wish i had the balls and knowledge to forage...Liver failure scares me

edit: I need to read better, Hen of the wood

Beautiful! What is the mushroom you ate and what is the red one? Is red one edible? Disclaimer: no one should eat based on what they see on a ski blog.

When we did a csa share asparagus was a big one for our orgo farmer. Apparently they are one of the few things that can put pace weeds at times making them farmer friendly.

Ps thanks so much for posting the foraging link for the Catskills area brewery. Very cool place.

Ya gotta fully cook your morels
Your day could be ruined

The mushrooms I ate are morels Morella escelunta. They must be cooked.

The red one on the tree is Hemlock reishi Ganoderma tsugae. I don’t have experience with it but it is usually dried for tea, powder or tinctures.

This is correct. 💯

Yes, one of the first plants to be harvested. Great perennial. I usually spot them in the wild in the summer due to their tall feathery appearance.

Yo Rip

When should I start looking for fiddleheads? Will all this rain help or hurt them this year. I really like those things. Sauteed in butter, salt, and black pepper. Yum!

Now, for sure, they might even be passed. It depends on where they are growing. I have one patch (Lo-Hud) that is moist, south facing, full sun and the fronds are already waist high. 250ft away drier, shady, more northern exposure and they are just unfurling. Got to get them when they are still completely curled up. Harvest only one or two per clump. Eat only small amounts. Must be cooked.
