ICE v Electric: Cost and Emissions

I got the $7500 federal tax credit and paid no sales tax in Jersey, so that was about $10K right off the price for me.

Then you save about $2k/year in gas and maintenance.

Depending on what you are comparing an EV may end up being cheaper in the long run.
If you factor in depreciation I doubt it. But it certainly is possible.

As much as I'd love to stick a finger in the eye of big oil, those 4 reasons you listed are on my list of like 8 reasons why I wouldn't buy an EV yet.

As you may recall I just replaced an 11 year old Crv with 105k miles on it with a new Passport. That 11yr crv still ran as good as day 1 and was still in superb condition inside and out. I didn't take a big depreciation hit either. I bought my 2025 Passport with confidence that it will deliver unprecedented reliability and will still have great trade in value after 10 years. An ev would not give me the same long term value and probably not the same reliability. I don't drive enough to offset upfront costs of an ev with gas savings.

I love the powertain tech of new cars like EVs and hybrids. I'm grateful to those buying them for many different reasons.

If I were to get an EV I'd lease it. But I'm done leasing since I expect to keep my cars 10+ years.

Love my new Passport. It's like a big CRV which I still think is one of the best cars ever made 😁
Agree with all of this. In fact, we do darn good with 10 yo CRVs. Not many cars we'll retail with 70+k miles on them. The CRV is definitely one of them though. The list of reliable SUVs with over a 100k miles is quite short.

I need to understand this. My Honda cost about $200 a year in maintenance (2 oil changes).

Tires and brakes of course. But both hybrid and EV use them.

$1800 in gas is about 50 fill ups, so that seems right as a skier racking up miles. (CRV numbers).

How much per year for electric? I'll assume it to be zero since I have no idea. Then the question is how many years, at $2000/year does it take you to make up the difference.

What EV is 40k? Do I want it? If an EV is 40k and the electric is free, you start saving that $2000 right away.

Every year I take my Alltrack to the stealership for routine service, and it's $700 minimum. Regardless of the miles driven. Once the car starts getting older then it's endless belts, chains, sensors, fluids etc...

I was only estimating about $1300 in gas savings actually.

If you charge off peak with pseg the electricity is like 75% discounted

In terms of what EV to buy you need to spend a little time looking around. If you can stomach a Swastikacar the Y is still the best bang per buck IMHO. In the US at least.

The Y is a sedan.

When I was comparing cost ($40,000) above I was using an SUV or truck.

For me, it doesn't work, yet.

What make is an all track? Buy one of the brands Camp mentioned instead.

the mav is a nice looking truck....but i would recommend a extended warranty. ford ain't exactly known for their quality

VW. I don't love modern Toyotas. The interiors are cheap and basic. 4 way lumbar is a must for me, hard to get in a Toyota.

Y is a hatchback, but surprisingly big in terms of cargo capacity. I think it can tow 4000 pounds? Didn't you say the only reason you want a truck is to tow a 1000 pound ATV?
