Sorry for the thuggish title, but, it's a word that fits in a title.

I have just spent my third 2-4 day period basically skiing GP, and one day, last Tuesday, skiing Toggenberg. It's a whole new experience for me this year. Normally, and if the plague didn't descend upon us this year, I am a Killington skier and then either the Rockies for a month lately or now, Europe, after experiencing two weeks over there two seasons ago. I will return to that schedule when the all clear sounds if I don't lose my savings to greedy Wall Street people.
I have also skied Hunter four times. And one time I didn't because they had a patrol problem. The less said the better.

The reason I first wanted to ski GP was because I was intrigued by the existence of a capable ski hill somewhat close to Upper Baltimore, where my girlfriend lives and I want to move to. So we drove up in more paranoid plague times a few months ago and stayed in Hope Lake Lodge and enjoyed what was maybe a 75% open mountain. Next two times, more snow, more fun. She's not fast, but likes the place, which is important. If it isn't soft, I can only like it for a few days, but, whatever. I caught some soft snow the second trip that was a ton of fun in a Lot of places. It was still snowing Tuesday at Toggenberg last Tuesday after a snowy weekend and Monday, and that experience was way cool. It was like my own private ski chair in the country.
I am intrigued by good skiing in CNY because I road bike more than I ski (it's the way it is in the east as far as season length), and CNY is renowned for road biking. I never made it over there when I lived in Saratoga Springs, the furthest was Cooperstown and maybe a little west, but, believe me, that is fine. I'd like to live in a place with both skiing and roads. No, Vermont sucks for road riding. Just don't.

So, here's my question, finally. Has anybody ever "backcountry" skied one of those farm slopes that just checker the landscape up there. Some of them look like an awesome way to spend a day. I wound up screwing up and driving north on 81 beyond Homer on Friday with the sun blaring, and there was a field up to the right the was massive, and looked like it had nice tilt to it. I understand that that is probably what Toggenberg originally was, a farm field with a rope tow in, what, 1960, like hundreds of other ski hills. But, what I mean is, no rope tow. Just skin up, ski down. I know it's all private property, of course. Has anybody tried? Found a friendly farmer or two? Does it happen?

? ? ?

Let's just call this Harv's time!

Couldn't find Upper Baltimore?

Meh. I dont think she'll like it. I'm not dying alone up there. Nice location, though. Road biking to the south to Cooperstown is awesome.
