Winter Weather 23/24

I'm guessing this rain, fog, and general misery isn't a boon for those NE ski resorts that are open this week?

All the snowmaking capacity in the world don't mean squat when it's too warm to make snow. 😩

snowmaking temps should return this weekend and last at least a week or more
That’s why the SE ski areas invested in snow power to blow their trails thick & stash some for rainy days. ❄️ efficiencies also increased.

Does more high speed lifts, ancillary attachments and buying out other bumps make a better product?

Here in Whitefish the snow report suggests downloading ch 1 from the summit. I skied down Russ,St. yesterday and there a two hundred yard stretch of knee high uneven moguls with sticks and icy troughs. The upper mt.is not much better.

It also makes a difference that ski areas in the southeast only have to cover 50-130 acres of well manicured trails. Lots of mowed grass that makes for easy hiking during the green seasons, with no rocks worth worrying about. The only effort required while taking a walk up a trail is crossing the ditches designed to make sure that water run off doesn't wash away dirt from the trails.

For context Plattekill has 130 acres, Belleayre has 175 acres, and Greek has 220 acres.

Transitioning to having as many automated snow guns as practical for the budget has made a big difference to resorts like Snowshoe, Wintergreen, and Massanutten in the last decade. The quality of the snow is much better now than 10-15 years ago when temp and humidity shifts relatively quickly.

We talkin' bears or flowers?
