Winter Weather 22/23

New forum too. We brought it over:

Was there a Day 1?
Yeh day one of that trip was at Crystal...I had stopped off in Seattle for one night on the way to AK and did a quick mission to ski Crystal and fly out to AK that night on the redeye...I likely posted a TR on it if it reads that way(...Day 2...etc)

A friend I met in grad school at Ole Miss, who studied forensic science, was from the Mississippi delta.
He told me he got a good job in La Jalla.
I told him, "it’s pronounced La Hoya and is in beautiful area but it’s gonna be like being on an island."
Ocean west of ya, desert east of ya, Tijuana south of ya and Elle Lay north of ya. All somewhat unworthy of proper habitations.
We went deep sea fishing when I visited one time and met his new wife who was of Japanese-Polish descent and is a shrink.
Later on he gotta a job at a Biotech in Seattle, has a son who also likes to go hunting and fishing & shooting bears, deer and turkeys.
Ya can take the boy outta the country but ya can’t take the country out of the boy.
The only big one he’s thinking about is the next big game he harvests.
Dude, are you drunk?
You know we love a little thread drift here and there. Tiro takes it to another level some times. The giant shoehorn for ski boots idea came of this so I’m not gonna judge.

@MC2 I never said it was going to happen in the next 30 years and neither does the author, but it does talk about that it could happen. Getting around a pay wall isn't hard, try another browser or incognito mode, I'm honestly curious your take on it.

No discussion of this upcoming weekends weather? I see snowflakes on iPhone weather app for LP with borderline temps. Perhaps it may actually snow

I’m sorry, I was confused because you said this:

I love Seattle but it's very expensive and it's about time for the Big One to hit.
Usually when I say it’s “about time” for something to happen, that usually means it’s going to happen pretty soon. Like, if I say “it’s about time to go to the store”, I usually don’t mean “after about 30 years or so”.

I managed to read the article & it was written in classic fearmonger fashion (describing things that could happen if…). It also does a shitty job of explaining why taking the average number of earthquakes over X years and noting that we haven’t had one for a while is a dumb way to do seismology. This is the only time the paper comes close to saying, maybe this is a bad way to do things, but then it goes right back to saying “but imagine if it *did* happen?!?”

It doesn’t do a very good job of explaining earthquake prediction at all, actually, and it ascribes probabilities that don’t seem to be based on anything (3 times higher than USGS probabilities).

Not a great way to present science imo. Something like this has more on the science with less fearmongering & hypotheticals (“And then the Power Grid will be destroyed, and then ravaging hordes of zombies will descend”, etc.):

Mike if you can think of a title for this earthquake thing I'll gladly break it out.

Call it “The Big One” & take it from his first post where he says it’s “about time for it to happen”
