Windham Conditions

I believe it was initially private for a very short time after it opened in 1960, and then reverted to private from 1968 until 1981 when it was purchased by Snow Time (which also owned Roundtop and Liberty in PA).
Irv Naylor owned Windham until he sold to local investors in 2005. He decided to focus on the 3 Snowtime resorts in central PA. Eventually sold to Peak Resorts, probably thinking a family-owned company was better than VR. I got the impression that he could have sold to VR at any time after VR started buying "urban" ski resorts. I imagine he was surprised when Peak was acquired by VR just a few years later. Naylor's son wasn't interested in being part of the ski industry. Even though Irv developed Roundtop so that his son could ski locally.

October 2005

Oof. I think even the biggest haters of VR can agree that the Sackler family is much, much more evil.
I doubt people who skied Snowtime resorts knew or cared that Peak Resorts had a connection to the Sacklers. In general they were spoiled by what Naylor had done for Roundtop, Liberty, and Whitetail. The season pass was good at all three mountains. There was night skiing all week. They weren't happy with Peak in general. Being able to drive to ski Hunter wasn't enough to make paying more for a season pass worthwhile for people living in DC/NoVA.

What Naylor thought about Peak selling out to VR is hard to know. My guess is that he wasn't too happy. I read somewhere that he wanted to stay in the ski business but had set up the company so that the actual owners were his grandchildren. They opted to take the money Peak offered.

Windham Mountain Club Announces 2023/2024 Ski Season Opening Day

Windham, NY – (November 22, 2023) The highly anticipated winter season is set to kick off this upcoming Friday, November 24 at Windham Mountain Club, and excitement is in the air as the Catskill Mountains’ premier destination gears up for the 2023/2024 ski season. Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Catskill Mountains, Windham Mountain Club is poised to provide an unforgettable winter experience for skiing enthusiasts of all levels with enhanced snowmaking, upgraded lifts and a reimagined culinary program.

For opening day, only advanced and expert terrain will be offered, with openings on Upper/Lower Whistler, a blue square trail from the summit, Upper/Lower Wolverine, a combination double-black diamond and blue square trail, Warpath Chute, a blue square connecting trail, and The Wall, a double-black diamond connection. Terrain will be serviced by one lift, the Westside Six (F Lift), a high-speed six-passenger chair. The skiing surface will be variable and skiers and riders should note that early-season conditions will exist.

Chip Seamans, President of Windham Mountain Club, commended the remarkable efforts of the Windham Mountain Club’s dedicated snowmaking team. "We're thrilled to welcome our guests starting the Friday after Thanksgiving and are committed to swiftly expanding terrain. We are anticipating a fantastic season ahead and we look forward to providing an exceptional winter experience for all.'"

Lifts will be open from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM on Friday, November 24, and from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, November 25 and Sunday, November 26, 2023. Windham Mountain Club will remain open for operation seven days a week following the weekend.

In July 2023, Windham Mountain Club announced a substantial investment of more than $70 million dollars in enhancements over the next several years to the mountain's amenities and services, which will benefit both guests and members. This year, skiers, snowboarders and visitors can expect the following upgraded offerings:

  • More automated snowmaking to provide more snow coverage in less time. Automation has been added for this season on Upper Wolverine, Lower Warpath, and Way to Go.
  • A full mechanical upgrade to the East Side Express (G Lift)
  • Minimal lift lines and uncrowded slopes for all members and guests, due to limiting overall capacity and implementing two-day minimums on peak days, which include Saturdays between January 6 to March 9; Sunday, January 14 and Sunday, February 18, 2024.
  • Refreshed and new culinary outlets, including the Foodhall, Seasons, Cin Cin!, and Sushi Bar Okami

First time in a while I won't be there for opening day. Previous two seasons had great opening days with falling snow. Can't really see how they plan to pull it off this year given the late afternoon webcam view and weather forecast. The current evening view is no better:

Monday 1/29/24

Good conditions today. Official snowfall amount was 8” but I’d say it was more from midway up the mountain to the top. Low tide sections much less troublesome than previous storms this season, although there were some exposed sections of running water on the sides of some trails (can’t remember the term for that). Lots of powder stashes and untracked lines to be found into the afternoon. A few icy hard pack corduroy sections but mostly soft carveable snow. If it stays cold, this will really help solidify the base and expand open terrain. Snow makers were active setting up hoses and guns for tonight.

For those that are interested, I’m riding a Gentemstick 144 Rocket Fish in the first photo. Switched over to a K2 158W Alchemist once things got tracked out. Both boards handle deep snow well, but the Alchemist crushes everything it encounters. New K2 Taro Tamai Snowsurfer boots felt good.
