Who's on the DL?

Got a foot thing going on too. I can ski (parallel) fine, but tele and nordic hurt my right foot. I always thought "if I get to old to ride the lift, there's always nordic" — which honestly I love more. It's a quiet forest thing.

Haven't really gotten new doc in NY yet, but I made contact with the Hudson Headwaters Health Network today. Seeing a foot doc Friday. Hoping it's an injury and not the end of the line (arthritis).

Fingers crossed.

On the upside, back is feeling much better.
Uhoh, sounds like it might be time to get some downhill boots

I saw a foot doc, got an x-ray and a consult.

Not a huge surprise I guess, it's arthritis. They can do something surgically, (clean it up) but results would be "temporary."

Temporary could be three months or five years. It's a one time option that requires them to fuse the joint as the next step after that procedure.

Apparently plenty of runners have this same issue, but you can run with a fused joint.

FWIW I can make parallel turns in my tele boots without issue.

So I guess tele is out. I really won't miss teleskiing while riding lifts, it's losing the nordic in our woods that would crush me.

Its not like I didn't see this coming but I was hoping for a miracle.

Obviously uprooting your life to ski as an old man is a big risk, and right now that taking that risk is looking foolish. But I'd rather be a broken down old man living in North River than the same in NJ.

There's also the future of NYSkiBlog. Do I really want to run this place if I can't ski?

I planned to earn 1000 feet of vert tomorrow am, and i'm still likely to do it. My tele boot isn't as stiff as an AT boot but in uphill mode it pivots and it barely flexes my toe. If I can get up to the top of Plattekill and float down without issue I'll be a lot less bummed tomorrow night than I am right now.

When I twisted my knee I went an ortho MD (Cuse long snapper on FB team with MD from Penn State). Said twas moderate arthritis. Offered cortisone jab but I declined. Did some PT sessions and was trained on at home exercises. Pain free now but hear/feel a click-snap every now and then. Skiing last year with compression knee sleeves resulted in significant improvements. Just made a lot of turns on nice snow while avoiding teeth chatter trails.

Have ya discussed this with yer boot fitter? Does yer Doc ski and/or do ya know one who tele tours?
a miracle.
They happen.

Nah, ya can ski living in a nice place.

Ya said ya can parallel turn ski pain free. Count yer blessings and enjoy the rides.

I’m Jonesing on all the nice fallen & manmade snow. Ullr came thru.

Sitting here typing blurry eyed after first eye cataract surgery a couple days ago. Scheduled ‘em so they’ll be healed before I usually start ski season after Christmastime.

Getting old tain’t for sissies.
Have fun & stay safe.
Make some smooth turns for me.

Planning on being back on the bumps in 26.
I love sparkly snow.

Harv, arthritis sucks. But it's an occupational hazard of aging. You coulda gotten arthritis sitting on you a$$ all day and watching TV.

Both of my big toes are arthritic. It makes classic technique skiing problematic, but I manage.

Hang in there lil camper. Like Ripitz said, Alpine isn’t the end of the world. And I’m willing to bet somebody here will figure the right setup and/or PT to keep you out in the woods too

Googled “arthritic feet” “telemark”.
The dang AI pushed this:

Could it just be your boots?
