Where are you skiing this week?

Mt van Ho on Saturday... unsure whether they'll be open on Easter Sunday. I might run on Sunday anyway just because three hours of the World Cup trails is so hard.

What makes em harder Peter? More ups and downs? Steeper?

Sorry if it’s a stupid question but I’m totally curious.

@raisingarizona there are no stupid questions. A couple things happened over time. Elite skiers have gotten more fit over the last 40 years. And xc trail systems have gotten shorter to make for better TV coverage and spectating. e.g. nowadays a 15 km race is gonna run multiple laps of a 3.75 km or 5 km loop where it might have been one big loop back in the day.

The Mt van Ho 1980 Olympic trails have plenty of hills, but there's no single climb as long and difficult as the A climb on the new trail system. And yeah, the descents are wicked fast. That having been said, the 1980 trails are still very fun.

The Lake Placid Loppet route encompasses most of what was used in the 1980 Olympic 50 km race. This year, with no natural snow, the race ran strictly on the World Cup 5k. Distance shortened from 50 km to 30 km and from 25 km to 15. I'm a card carrying member of AARP and I could not have done 5 laps on that at race pace.

Hoping this answers your question.

Cool, thanks for filling me in. I know nothing about Nordic.

Not this week but next week. Heading to Jay Peak for the first time since COVID lockdowns in 2020. It's kind of a big deal, since I've been skiing there almost every season before then since I was 12. That's a long time.

Anyhoo, if you are in the JPR area April 12-14, look for a group of four male family members riding together, bickering as families do. Two old guys, one slightly less old guy, one 40ish guy. All in Full Tilt boots, which is a bit weird. Say hi, we're friendly.

Probably Gore or possibly Belleayre if the snow drops down south enough. Original idea was Gore or Pico Friday, but looks like it might need to be Thursday now. Looking forward to another early morning drive in marginal road conditions 👀 Hopefully this storm is a bit more elevation oriented than the last one so 87 is in a bit better shape.

If you like elevation storms this has been a solid year. At least 3 good sized events.

Gore will likely hit her season average of 125" with this storm. Even a terrible year can be decent.
