Triple Black Diamonds at Big Sky

And they don't know how to spell Montana?

I think Windham puts a combo black diamond inside a blue square to indicate a harder intermediate run. Same idea?

Telluride has double greens and double blues. Both as trails and for ski school categories.

Of course, Alta only has green, blue, black. Black terrain can be straightforward or extreme, depending on snow and weather conditions. On the other side of Mt. Baldy, Snowbird has more trail categories.

As someone who didn't start skiing off-piste until after age 50, the trails at Big Sky designated double blue make sense to me. My first trip to Big Sky included a few adventure runs on the easier bumps on Andesite that were rated blue, going with friends who knew the mountain well. Took quite a while to get down. I wasn't skiing bumps and trees regularly until after age 60. Quite a few of the double blue bump runs are certainly not black terrain. But someone who mostly enjoys blue groomers could be pretty unhappy. Especially on the longer trails like Pomp where there is no way to bail.

I'm heading back to Big Sky in early March.

Our blues are your blacks

Whiteface
Blues and blacks along with reds, whites and golds are all types of tees golfers used when playing the same course.
USGA goes out and rates em all (Slope Rating), then with their handicap system allows strokes to be given to make matches fair (unless there’s dang sandbaggers).

Why ain't there a more systemized rating system for skiing mountains trails?
