Today's Ride

For me it's hands and legs. I need shell pants but I can't imagine riding in shell pants.

Riding the bike is a bit like riding a high speed lift at 5 degrees. It makes it's own windchill.

On another topic, possibly related...

Can you tell me, are there tenets of a low angle life?

I pursue fresh snow on low angle terrain, but is there more to the low angle life than skiing? (and mtb)

I run pretty hot when I'm moving so generally I go the with old adage, "be bold, start cold."

For legs I wear a fleece compression layer and/or merino layer, then on top of those I wear Eddie Bauer Guide Pro pants. If it's really cold like now I'll wear some soft shell pants that I might wear for spring skiing or snowshoeing on top of my merino/fleece base. Also I've seen these RockBros pants on Amazon. They look really nice and are under $50.

On my torso I go with a compression base plus merino 250, light down vest and old ski shell to keep the wind out. I usually keep the pit vents wide open and will often open the front zipper quite a bit once we get climbing.

For my hands I've found old ski gloves have generally been good. But I did just get a pair of 45Nrth winter cycling gloves---
I couldn't resist they were only $40 at the time. https://www.treefortbikes.com/45NRTH-MY23-Sturmfist-4-Winter-Cycling-Gloves

Awesome! We need more pics from your jobs:)

I got these pants after getting sticker shock looking at Bjorn and Swix at a XC ski shop.

They work great for mid winter riding, XC skiing and hiking. I wear a light thermal layer underneath and a heavy one when it’s colder. The inside is waffled. The front is a windstopper soft shell and the back is stretchy and dumps heat. The bottom cuff has a zipper. You can keep it closed for a tight cuff while riding or open it to fit over ski boots. I found I don’t need gaiters with them while skiing. I have the jacket too and the zipper eventually failed but that was after thousands of miles. Going to have it replaced at the local tailor.

In the shoulder seasons I use the Fjallraven / Specialized pants. They are expensive but have held up extremely well. Same premise, windstopper front and stretchy in the back for mobility and thermal regulation, but not insulated. I found I haven’t gotten too hot or too cold with this setup. Fjallraven makes a proprietary material meant for waxing. You can wax the front of the pant for extra waterproofing but I haven’t felt the need to do that yet. No zipper on the cuff so I don’t use them for skiing but they work great for hiking and biking.

I only use shell pants while riding when it’s raining.

For gloves I’ve been loving these convertible BD Cirques. I use them for biking and XC skiing. The shell stuffs in the cuff.

I use a thin liner if needed if it’s super cold and outer waterproof shells when when it gets extreme.

Great 6.5mi ride with the guys today. About 4" of fresh snow overnight left the woods magically beautiful. Lake Ontario looking cold and icy.

I really need to get some wider tires and maybe even studded. Another bike tech friend is thinking Shwalbe radials instead of studded might be better than studs without the cost. Currently have 2.6" width front and back and could probably fit 3" without issue.
