Today's Hike

I'm not worried, just enjoying something I've loved for 5 years.

Do you know what MERLIN is? It's awesome, by Cornell, a free app you use to identify birds. You enter your location by zip code, and you let it listen to birds calling. The app identifies the bird for the user, with a picture and a description.

Cornell gets tons of data points for their tracking of bird populations and migration.

Very cool.

That 1600 acre park in NJ I always post pics from is designed to be a bird sanctuary. It's become a major stop for east coast migration over the last 30 years. (Birds thrive with some woods and lots of open fields, the fields are loaded with SEEDS they eat.) We've identified more birds there, than in our wooded lot in the Adk. Maybe 20 species in NJ and 6 on our land in NY.

I'm sure there are more species in both places. For one thing we've never taken it out at night.

birds aren't real

Late night ramble on the AT. Great temps.

Moneyhole and Chimney Top multi-use trail in Fahnestock with Team Turtle. Nice stroll through a mixed forest to great views of the Hudson Highlands and Fjord to the north. 3 miles roundtrip. Highly recommended.

Today did an interval session. Saturday did my first 12 mile run since the June half. Quick for me - last mile was 40 seconds below my half marathon pace.
Ran on the Jones beach bike path. Not sure how long it is, but you can take it from ‘main land’ Long Island over the bay south to Jones island for almost the entire length - from mainland to captree state park at the east end of jones island has to be close to 15 miles.
Quick pic of where I stopped to get a Gatorade and pretzel after finishing the run, maybe 100 yards from the Jones Beach theatre.
The salty pretzel and Gatorade were like 14 bucks but I didn’t care since our spot on the beach was a mile away and I was hungry.
After went back to my wife, daughter and her friend and jumped in the ocean. Calm waves and a bit cool for this time of year. Which was quite nice after getting my temp up with the run.
My times have dropped a bit - I think it is a combination of losing weight on the long scout hike and having just been at elevation for two weeks.
