Yesterday’s hike… one of my normal spots but always fun. The loop hike around Silvermine Lake at Harriman.
In the past I’ve always walked along the lake on the road side, bushwhacked down to its outlet stream below its dam, crossed the stream on rocks to the Silvermine Ski road, then followed that up to its junction with the AT. This time I went the other way. The trail is between the lake and the old ski area.
It follows the lakeshore for awhile. On this section, I encountered four groups. There is a stone “lean to” shelter where this trail meets the AT. This bunch was heading up to it. I saw two other single hikers and a young couple on this section of trail. 3 dogs amongst them, one off leash.
Lots of evidence of extensive trail maintenance in this area. Thank you NY NJ trail maintainers.
The previously mentioned shelter. The AT runs along the ridge right above it.
Looking back from above
Up on the AT, the top of the ridge has a different feel to it.
It’s mostly wide open along here but it goes through some thick scrub in spots. “Hey Bear, Hey bear” I didn’t see any bears.
Other than a section way over on the other side of the thruway, Rock climbing is forbidden inside the park. I’ve heard that they’re really nasty about it too. I always thought this little face looked like it would be fun. It’s exactly at the junction of the AT and the Silvermine Ski Road. The stairs are where the AT continues towards the Palisades Paekway.
This is the junction
The ski road is a 1930s era project. They did trail maintenance different back then I guess.
I left the AT and followed the Ski Road downhill. Eventually the lake reappeared on the left.
I considered taking my shoes off and walking across the dam here but I wanted to follow the ski road all the way down to Seven Lakes Drive. Just below here is where we normally rock hop across going in the other direction.
Seems fine
