Because, as always, money. Gas and oil pipelines are built to transport a valuable commodity that sells at a big profit, even after the expense of transport. This silly idea would mean building a very expensive pipeline that would only benefit the SLC region. They, or, probably, the state of Utah would have to pay for it, and also negotiate with California and Nevada for rights to construct the pipeline. It would be like the most expensive city water treatment solution ever devised, with the only return on "investment" would be the ability for SLC metro to grow even more and faster, which is kinda perverse, if you think of it.The reason the lake is salty is because it has no outlet other than evaporation, so all the minerals accumulate. The reason the water level is so low is due to population growth and increased usage of water from the lake's tributaries. The idea of a pipeline from the ocean is that it would keep the lake at a safe level, while allowing the city to use freshwater from the tributaries. It's not an outlandish idea at all. We have oil and gas pipelines everywhere. Why not have one for water?
I realize now that the pipe is to supply the lake itself, but still, that's a lot of water for 1 pipe.I'd imagine the volume of water you would need flowing through that pipe to supply 1.5M people is orders of magnitude bigger then anything that flows through a natgas pipe.
If 1.5 million people use 100 gallons per day, that's only 150 million gallions, or about 20 million cubic feet. The Iroquois pipeline that brings natural gas to NYC from Canada is 125 million cubic feet per day, and that's just one of the pipelines that serve the city.I'd imagine the volume of water you would need flowing through that pipe to supply 1.5M people is orders of magnitude bigger then anything that flows through a natgas pipe.
Rescue Great Salt Lake with seawater from the Pacific? Utah lawmakers consider it
Utah lawmakers are giving serious thought to building a pipeline to the Pacific to move seawater to the shrinking Great Salt Lake.www.sltrib.com
Has anyone heard of this idea? It's a pipeline to replenish the lake with water from the Pacific Ocean.
It’s going to be sold as an effort to offset the rising oceans from a warming climate!Because, as always, money. The church will probably figure out how to get the federal government to pay for it, like they got all of us to pay for a new massive highway expansion for the two week Olympics in '01. The Mormons are great business people.
Now we know how we're gonna pay for it: a partnership of skiers who want to keep the Wasatch snow machine going and environmentalists. Win-win!It’s going to be sold as an effort to offset the rising oceans from a warming climate!
