Snowmaking

I heard Gore this winter will outsource snowmaking to an independent contractor. No further details known to me. Have any of you heard about this?

Are snowmaking contractors even a thing? ORDA should give a consulting contract to Howie or Bruce. They were the only managers who ever made good skiing at Gore.

OpenSnow is making their "Snowmaking (Wet Bulb)" forecast graphs public for Premium subscribers starting in November 2025. They have been working on Snowmaking graphs for a few years. I've seen them in Daily Snows for the midwest and the mid-Atlantic/SE. There is a free preview at the moment. Putting a couple screen shots here while I have access. I've been watching the Colorado mountains that typically open well before Thanksgiving the last few weeks to get a feel for the new features.

While I'll keep a Base subscription as long as I'm skiing, I don't need the level of detail for forecasting that true weather geeks find fascinating. For Massanutten, I know the micro-climate well enough to know what's likely to happen before I go there to ski based on regular weather forecasts and webcams. Have gone to a 4-person group subscription so I can share with my best ski/travel buddies who also like to watch the snow forecasts and webcams for their favorite destinations.

Whiteface plans to open mid-November. Jay Peak is shooting for Nov. 27. The bold line is the OpenSnow forecast by default. All forecast graphs are interactive, so can highlight any of the other forecast line of interest.

Whiteface Oct. 27 thru Nov. 10, with Nov. 1 marked

Very good news—and congratulations to Gore Mountain on the decision. Last year, snowmaking struggled until the contractors showed up and flipped the switch. They became a true boon to the mountain, walking the trails and checking the equipment as they worked their way down, then hopping the lift to do it all again. They knocked off icicles, cleared the build-up, and slid down the slopes on their shovels—sledding like proud and kids. Here’s to another strong start and an even better season ahead!

Last year those “contractors" were ORDA worker bees who came in from WF & Belle in February.

According to multiple posts in the "Gore Conditions" thread, twasn’t a strong start, snowmaking wise, last year at Gore. Hope it snows a lot and stays cold.
