There’s definitely going to be much bigger problems than keeping the ski industry afloat but skiing is definitely at the forefront of being affected by a rapidly changing climate. It’s hard not to get bummed out by all of this but if I put my personal emotions off to the side the whole thing is fascinating but still, scary.

In the face of catastrophic climate change, outdoor recreation will be the last of my worries. Real hard to even go on a bike ride when the air is filled with fire smoke, crazy to experience that out on the east coast this past summer.

Too bad people don't understand that climate change is a problem for humans not the planet. Life will thrive without humanity here to fuck it all up.

It’s crazy to be actually seeing all of this unfold in real time. I’ve said this a million times on here but humans aren’t good at seeing the big picture or thinking beyond the today so yeah, stressing over skiing is sort of silly if you consider the actual implications.

I’m definitely going to try and enjoy myself as much as possible while I’m still around. The extreme weather patterns can give way to some awesome skiing around here when we are getting it. We are forecasted for up to 28 inches by Wednesday morning. This one could really start to open things up for us!

Crazy fucked up humans started the Caldor fire, allegedly.

Nothing is going to change until the cost of burning fossil fuels is priced into the things we all do.

Fossil fuel prices should be 10X what they currently are.

I was in California this past July. I drove through south shore and camped up in the mountains south of the 50 probably around 20 miles from the lake. I saw the amount of city people recreating and the terrifying condition of the forests there. It was a Saturday so I camped off some rarely used logging roads to get away from the crowds. About 500 vertical below me was a packed dispersed use camping area and I was really concerned about someone below doing something stupid and being trapped up there.

That whole area was burned a month or two later in the Calder fire. I camped in an area that had been logged and theoretically thinned but the forest floor was like an 8 to 12 inch deep sponge of dry needles and old logging slash sticks.

California is fucked.

I also thought about trumps speech where he said California needs to rake the hills. That dude was way out of touch. Even in the mountains closer to the coast all around wine country the grasses grow back every wet season and then dry right back out in the spring. By late summer areas that had fire just 3 or 4 years ago are burning again and it’s mainly being ignited by humans.

Topic!

It’s going to be interesting to see when and how Sierra At Tahoe bounces back. That ski area got torched!

Not sure why, every so often the NYT let's me read an article without paying, including this time.

At the end the article says basically that the biggest impact from skiing, by far, is the driving and flying we do to get there.

Aren't most fires set off by humans?
