Ski Travel 2020/2021 Season

Snowbird is always in my top 3 or 5 list for ski areas in the US for terrain. It’s simply that awesome imho.

Alta is a classic and a great mountain too but to be honest I really prefer the way the Bird skis.
The goods are kind of hidden at Alta whereas they are visibke at the 'Bird.

I can see where you’re coming from but after following friends around the Bird with little time to do anything other than fight to keep up I’ve found it to have tons of hidden nooks and crannies. It’s crazy playful but without the Alta traverses.

Ok folks, soliciting input!

My daughter is starting her life in Los Angeles and I’ll be flying out with her tomorrow to help get her settled in.

For one, this may be the trip to achieve both surf and ski.

However, this post is about the ski portion. After leaving LA I’ll ski some on the way back, most likely this coming Sunday to Wed. Need to choose from the following options:

Squaw/Alpine and spring skiing....daytime temps in the 40s, a little colder up high, possibility for a couple inches of snow in the overnights.

Baker and winter.....daytime temps around 30 with the possibility of a foot or more of powder Saturday night thru Tuesday.

Decisions, decisions! I’m torn. What would you do? Flights for Seattle would be about $100 more than flights for Reno. Baker lodging would be cheaper.

Squaw about 85% open, missing some of the expert terrain off KT and the Palisades. Baker full on 100%.

Damn, I’m getting to Squaw on the 10th. One week too late.

I guess if your sole purpose was skiing, I’d go to Baker.

I could still change it up, possibly....but I think I’m going Squaw/Alpine. Exploring a kick ass resort I haven’t seen most of, in some nice spring conditions, will work just fine for me.

Baker will get snow, but the freezing level is iffy, and if they get rain mixed in it won’t be fun powder.

For what it's worth, here's what a couple of well traveled Californians had to say a few weeks ago about skiing Squaw/Alpine in April this season.

Appreciated Marz!

I’ve been checking forecasts and debating since Wed.....and I think I’m sticking with Tahoe.

While I’ve seen a forecast or two that Baker could see as much as 8-10 inches Sat -Sun, OpenSnow is only forecasting a couple, with an iffy snow level at that. Not going to chase what will probably only be a couple inches, and Cascade Concrete at that.

Squaw/Alpine looks to be spring-y. Maybe too warm Sun, but cooling on Mon/Tues. I’ll chance it there to poke around a massive resort I’ve seen very little of.

Hard to go wrong!

Bonus. I deferred my Ikon 20/21 Session Pass. I can roll that into a 21/22 Base Ikon and ski with it at Squaw /Alpine this trip. I was going to get that pass anyway, so the skiing this trip is essentially free!

A-Basin skiing has been hitting this past few weeks. I know that they opened up most of if not all of the East Wall area recently.

Does that timing for getting the credit work for you? I think the credit doesn't go into your account until April 19. That means have to wait until then to use it to buy Ikon 2021-22 if you want to use the credit. People who deferred get the renewal bonus as I understand it.
