Ski Industry "Debundling"

Did there used to be benches there? Only skied the place a handful of times so I may be misremembering

Here's how well received paid bag storage is at Stratton. This is the hallway leading to the men's room. How this is better than having racks on the sides is beyond me.
If their men’s room ever floods it ain’t gonna be pretty.

So, apparently Waterville Valley reversed course and decided to provide free bag storage. It is outdoors though.

Pleased to report that Windham still has free bag storage in the lodge. On days with extreme weather, it's very important to have access to your bag during the day in case you need to add or shed layers, and Windham's parking (while free) is really far away.

Another reason that all ski resorts need to offer free bag storage:

With more ski areas encouraging carpooling, and carpool apps becoming more common, some people will ride back with a different person than they rode up with. Therefore, they will need bag storage. Unfortunately, most western resorts have only paid options. Why carpool if you'll have to blow 20 dollars on a locker once you arrive?

Interesting and well put sno, I’ve never thought about that

Good point. It's probably not an apples-to-apples comparison but ski areas do it for the same reason that airlines charge for bags -- because they can. Is it really $20 to store a boot bag?

Bags add weight to the plane and thus more fuel burn. So there is a direct cost to them for taking your bags. There isn't really any cost for a ski area to provide shelves to leave your bags.

Traditionally, the way to avoid paying to store your bag is to boot up at the car, but with more resorts encouraging carpooling or public transit, this isn't an option for a growing number of skiers. I can't think of a more effective way to discourage carpooling or public transit than providing only paid options for bag storage.
