Plattekill Conditions

I'd like to know about the Catskill 4:

Mountains ranked by customer satisfaction
Mountains ranked by percentage of return season passholders
How the pricing models compare

I'd still like to hear from anyone, how they would change Plattekill's pricing, if you were the owner.

How would you price it?
If it were ~ $100 cheaper which most early purchase season pass products are, I would have picked it up now. Since it's only $20 I'll wait until the fall and see if my kid is ready. If he isn't I'll just buy day tickets when I can make it

See? This exactly.

I might be a small edge case though. If I were to guess most Platty season pass holders are long time customers, many of whom have property in the area. These people are going to renew anyway and the loss of $100 per established pass holders > the loss of a few people on the bubble like myself.

Though I do think the new partner network changes that calculation as the value of the Platty pass is beyond Platty now.

My own personal view is that Plattekill's day ticket price to snowmaking ratio makes the day ticket the obvious option. I buy my season pass based almost entirely on where I know I will be able to get the most amount of days in. Belleayre is the obvious choice when it comes to that for me. It is the closest drive of any Catskill mountain to where I live and I've consistently had seasons stretch November to April hell even May one year. If I'm committing hundreds of dollars to a pass product (particularly here in region with variable winter weather) I appreciate the consistency of being to head to to the hill more or less whenever (including weekdays) and know terrain will be open.

I still think Plattekill is hands down the best skiing and riding in the Catskills but a less crowded parking lot and no lift lines just are not enough for me to commit to it being a place I am a pass holder at. Especially as someone who gets maybe half my days in mid-week. If we had a guarantee of a consistent 30+ inch snowpack all winter long with no thaw, I'd probably have a different take on it all. If Belleayre were to disappear (Windham is long dead to me) I think Plattekill would be the obvious Catskill choice for a pass, even factoring in no weekday skiing. Unfortunately in our region so much of it comes down to snowmaking for me.

Laz LOVES selling day tickets. Highest yield of all.

The question is — how would you price passes and tickets if you were the owner?

half my days in mid-week

Obvious if you ski midweek, Plattekill doesn't make sense. Most of the Plattekill passholders I know who can ski midweek have a Belle pass too.

As a customer, why wouldn't you ski a place that has had $30m in capex in the last 10 years? That's a big reason I ski there. When capex isn't tied to financial results that's a huge advantage for customers.

Hell if a pass was free skier visits would go through the roof. I have a Belle pass and it is almost free. With property near Gore, i think it costs me (not sure how much, but a small amount?) to add Belle.

My question remains - as an owner - how would you price it? Would you want more skier visits at a lower price? Sounds like some here are saying yes. So how would you price it?

The original question was pertaining to early season pass purchasing correct?

Belleayre's season pass goes up 17% from the early year purchase to mid year purchase and then 7% from mid to late year purchase.

Plattekill's season pass goes up 2.5% and then 3.25% over each increase.

I can't seem to come up with either of the MegaPass pricing schedules, if anyone can find it I'd be curious to see their percentage increase. I would also be curious to know for each pass product, what percentage of sales are sold within each pricing period. I don't think that is information enthusiasts like us will be able to find. Belleayre's pricing scheduling makes sense to me, at least from my sales/business background. Typically early commitment to any product is rewarded with either a discount or dating incentive. Plattekill seems to be flipping the script on that approach.

I think it would be going too far say that Plattekill is a boutique product but it’s not quite apples to apples to compare it to ski3 or epic/ Ikon. How does it compare to other independents in the wider region?
