ORDA Opening Announcement Rant

Opening days on limited terrain are always going to suck, if your stoke is so high you just gotta roll with the punches.

I learned my opening day lesson last year (not ORDA) never riding in PA again .

Hilarious.

Same thing at Abasin in opening day. And yet, they could get a dump on a 100 inch base in April, and, nobody, if it's on a weekday.

This is why those in the know don't really start getting going till February. Best snow and the least crowds are generally going to be found after Presidents day.

I don't think it's necessarily new phenomena but I do think the pandemic has brought a sort of present mindedness to activity and consumption. When its on my mind I want it NOW! Just a working theory but I do think there is something to it.

I can understand some amount of frustration with ORDA, and I agree they are amongst the worst in this regard.

However, as others have pointed out—the lack of early season information is not unique to ORDA. For example, W/B opens tomorrow and there have been no announcements as to what lifts will be running. Their site doesn’t even display how much base they have, and if it weren’t for a thread on TGR, I wouldn’t know!

As frustrating as it may be, I’m just grateful to be getting some early season turns in this week.

Update: Gore now has some opening day details on their site.

"We Are Opening On Friday!

Our first chair of the season is scheduled for 10am! Snowmakers have been on the attack, hammering out a 1.5-mile route from the top of AEII that combines the upper portion of Sunway with Wild Air, Pot Luck, and the newly widened Arena. Open terrain is for intermediate and advanced abilities, hang tight beginners because we’ll be adding terrain for you in the very near future. Snowmakers are blasting out a nice early season base on Bear Cub and Jamboree."

Sometimes the anality here is effing rediculous

Belleayre got the date wrong on their website. They're opening Saturday, which is the 27th, but it says Saturday the 29th. Oops.

Started paying attention to when announcements were made for openings in the northeast coming up in the next few days. Random ski resorts with dates based on ski forum posts by people who had their own reasons for paying attention.

*Nov 26: Hunter, NY - delayed from 19Nov as of 15Nov, announced 24Nov
*Nov 26: Stowe, VT - delayed from 19Nov as of 15Nov, announced 23Nov
Nov 26: Bretton Woods, NH - announced 23Nov
***Nov 26: Loon, NH - announced 22Nov or 23Nov
Nov 26: Jiminy Peak, MA - announced 24Nov
Nov 27: Wachusett, MA - announced 24Nov

In the southeast, having any slopes open before Dec is always a bonus. As of Nov. 24, there are three SE ski areas open, all in NC. Appalachian made the announcement yesterday that they would be open today.
