Old School Skiing

Video from an xc World Cup in Biwabik MN, 1985. At that point, skating was largely uncharted territory. Bill Koch used the technique to win the overall World Cup in 1982, causing an uproar in Scandinavian nations.

The ski boots they're using here are basically bedroom slippers in terms of stiffness. At 48 seconds into the vid, you see athletes using the now obsolete marathon skate technique: One ski in the classic track; the other ski doing the skate.

At 1:01, skiers are herringboning up a hill that nowadays would be considered a bump, rather than skating. The only guy skating up it is Vladimir Smirnov at around 2:00. Even Gunde Svan, who was the Kobe Bryant of skiing in that era, herringboned that hill.
