Old School Skiing

A north country friend sent this old photo of an aid station for the 50k race at the 1932 Olympics. Anybody need some gruel? How about a smoke?

To think that that was originally planned as one big, honkin' 50 km loop. Trails are overgrown in the woods by River Rd, and also, if I read correctly, crossed some private property. Started and finished at the Olympic stadium in town. Although I've done a fair amount of searching, I couldn't find any trail maps.

Whatabout the fur coats & the dude in the back rockin a white shirt, tie, overcoat and fedora just staring straight at the camera? He gotta be in charge of something somewhere.

Fur coats. I'm guessing you prolly had to have the time - i.e. money - to just hang out in the woods all day to dish out steak and raw eggs to starving skiers. Instead of cutting wood, working your garden or whatever. I seem to recall my grandfather saying that horses were still common in Warrensburgh in the 1930s.

Incidentally, the winning time in the 18 km race was 1h 23m. Diggins's last win, in a 20 km skate race, was under 46m 26s. How times have changed.

If my life had gone a little differently, I might have been a clothes horse. Thank the gods I'm not.

Yes, my understanding was that it was one big, honkin’ loop through the Sentinel Range Wilderness.

Bro, this is the old school skiing thread not one about urban fashion. Get real.
