Oak Mountain Conditions

On my way home last night from Oak for the B-P/Amsterdam ski race team banquet, I found out that Royal invited its staff to Oak for the day today. So I drove back up this morning and got to ski Oak. I'm glad this happened, because with the wind and the freeze-up following the r*** I probably would have otherwise stayed home.

I knew from Thursday night that the snow was still deep, but I have to say my expectations for conditions were not very high. Turns out since Oak hasn't been open since before the storm, they were able to give the mountain time to drain and freeze before running the groomers, resulting in a pretty nice frozen granular surface. As a bonus, it was snowing off and on, hard at times, and there was around an inch of powder on average (more where the wind was depositing, less where it was blowing off). I skied most of the open terrain and it was all good. Even on the ungroomed Upper Devils, the fresh snow was just enough to make it a really nice run. The only ones I doubled up on were Oak Mountain Run and Ryan's. While it wasn't the packed powder we have been enjoying for so long this winter, the conditions were a pleasant surprise. And the wind was blowing for sure, but it didn't cause me any trouble.

That's some important strategery right there.

Oak write up

Looks like folks are simply solving the mountain worker bee housing issue with some on site cabins.

Never heard of Oak Mountain till now. At $53 I just might have to check it out! Cool bar for Apres is always something I appreciate.
You should definitely go. It's a cool place. So fun. And they do a nice job there. Speculator is a nice town too boot.

I skied it last year and really liked the place, definitely a local vibe. There's not a lot of vertical but the people there seemed very nice. I plan on returning for sure. Cheap enough and you can park steps away from lift.

Who's in for Opening Day?
