NYSB Site Issues

Well this fucking bites:

It's about a picture posted without permission.

But all Scotty did was post a link to an article with this guys picture in it.

I had to take this article down, apparently linking to it is a copyright infringement.

I don't understand how TF posting a link can be a copyright violation. But I'm not taking any chances.

Might want to Google that some - for example:

Good catch! Has been around at least since early 2022.

March 2023
"If you have received a "DMCA Copyright Infringement Notice" from a company named "Nationwide Law/Legal Services", it's a fake company. I don't know the real person behind it, but we've got an identical notice from several different "companies" over the past years. I know what to do with it, but there may be new bloggers who received the same or similar notification and feel intimidated by it. So if you do, don't do what the email tells you! I'll explain.
. . .

It's a Fake SEO Agent

The truth is, Nationwide Legal Services is not a law company, it's a backlinking agent, promising clients higher search engine rankings in exchange for a fee.

But what they do is threaten other website owners with fake legal action.

This is embarrassing for the clients, too. Paying for the service, genuinely believing that whoever approached them was a legitimate SEO agency, but it turns out they're not.

In this particular email that I received, the sender asks me to link back to motorbiketireshop.com. I've checked the site but the site owner's information is missing - it just says "The Team at Motorbike Tire Shop". So this site may not be genuine, either. Maybe the owner also owns the Nationwide Legal Services site (nationlaw.org) too. Who knows?

. . ."

March 2023 - includes 10 min video explanation
"On a few occasions last year I wrote about a scam in which someone who pretends to be an attorney from a law firm called Nationwide Legal or Arthur Davidson Legal sends an email stating that a website owner has committed a copyright violation. The recourse that they seek is a link to another website for credit for the image. All of the details of the scam can be read here, here, and here. All that to say, the scam is back!
. . ."

Thanks people.

This has happened to me before, but they were legit claims about forum members posting others images they found on the net.
I have been able to delete the images to resolve it in the past. One time at WORK we got nailed by a writer using an image and we had to pay.

Never saw it for a link. I should have been more suspicious. I was suspicious but not enough. The reality is the people who do this "legitimately" are also scammers.

Normally I do google the name with "scam" after it to see what I can learn. I just didn't this time.

Thanks again.

I removed the Skiology thread. Lots of incoming whiny (not NYSBers).

I assume that will satisfy both doxxer and doxxed.

The way this game works, you assign those titles based on whose load of crap you buy.

MC is right, life is too short to spend your time reading conspiracy theories.

Did I miss something or do I not know what doxing is? Did somebody publish personal details? Home address? Employer? I don’t think it’s doxing if the subject identifies himself by his first name and is then addressed that way. When we talk about the owner of Plattekill, we say Lasz. When we talk about Storm Skiing Journal, we say Stu. They have identified themselves publicly in association with their businesses. Are we talking about something more than that? Seriously, what did I miss?
edit: never mind. I don’t really care. Carry on.

Maybe doxxing isn't the right word.

There's a private facebook group dedicated to giving Matt a hard time. Apparently Matt is a member of the group(?) and posted some screencaps that included another guy's identity. I don't read Matt's conspiracy theory posts, so I missed it.

Matt and the other guy were contacting me about it yesterday, asking me to take different parts of the thread down.

I told them both I would take it down if they would leave me alone. Maybe the wuss way out, but I did it because it was easier for me.

FWIW I reread the thread before removing it from sight, and I stand behind everything I said.
