Need help deciding where to visit regularly (from Pittsburgh)

Late to this thread but unless you plan on staying there weeks at a time, or flying into Albany, having a vacation home more then a 4 hour drive is crazy to me. I used to predominantly be a Killington Skier but switched over to Gore 5 or 6 years ago cause the extra 45 minutes after 4 hours of driving killed me.

I'd also like to buy something in the next few years if finances allow. I do worry about investing in something whose value depends on cold weather and snow...

Yes it is. Still wouldn't change a thing.

Although I'm not sure I'd call it a "home."
 
I agree that having a vacation home 7 hours away is crazy. From my experience, every hour you add to the drive over 2 hours cuts down on the number of times you'll use it exponentially. Two hours away, you can leave on Friday at 6:00 and be there by 8:00 and restaurants are still open.
