Need help deciding where to visit regularly (from Pittsburgh)

So I'm from the finger lakes and my question would be what vibe are you looking for?

If all you care about is skiing, then yes Gore is the move. If you are look more for nature and solitude then I would also suggest the ADK's.

butttt the fingers lakes have there qualities. There is always stuff going on in the warmer months and the FLX are home to one of the best wine areas in the country. There are many more breweries, distilleries, and eateries popping up as well. If you have never done a wine tour in the summer, its a must. There is a huge social scene on most of the lakes, with bars and restaurants lake side. The fact that its closer may mean you get more use out of it year round. Bristol has some of the best snowmaking in the state, and there will be 6 other ski resorts within less than 2 hours from you in the FLX. (HV, Tog, Lab, Song, Greek, Swain). Then there's all the state park. Yes the ADK's are one big park and are beautiful in there own right. But there's Watkins glen, Grimes Glen, taughannock falls and many more in the area.

Things to think about. Both areas have the qualities. The ADK's will be the better skiing, and you will be "closer to nature". The FLX are a little more lively, with the beverage scene, farmers markets and lakes.

Man this is tough. I am thinking nature and solitude will slightly outweigh skiing, just because I see us spending more days doing warm outdoor activities than days skiing on the mountain. I'm just kind of snobby when it comes to ski conditions and I feel like I need a great mountain to be satisfied. That being said, I can always take a short trip out west to scratch that itch...

FLX is looking good because of proximity. Wineries and Breweries are super nice, but I don't want too much hustle and bustle either. Def want to connect with nature and have a little solitude.

Bristol would the closest and easiest for us - is there enough to do around there during the warmer weather? Also, what makes it have the best snowmaking? I've always wondered how it differs from mountain to mountain. I generally hate fake snow...

I appreciate the responses, everyone!

I see us doing a lot of hikes with the dog too, so mountain hikes would be a factor and great option. Are there a few of those in the fingerlakes? I know the ADKs have them. I pretty much know nothing...

I don’t know of any mountain hikes in the Fingers but there is some good hiking. Found out the hard way that dogs aren’t allowed on the Gorge Trail in Watkins Glen. Try hiking from winery to winery. I bet you couldn’t do all of them.

Another thought is Bristol Mountain in NYS. That is a 5 hour drive and Canandaigua Lake ( and a few others) is a couple miles from Bristol. Bristol has a 1200 ft vert.
If you find yourself in this area stop in at Wizard of Clay, find Wizard II (Jamie), and tell him Chris and Vicki said Hi!

Those are good suggestions. I didn't realize there were a few more mountains near greek peak. Also didn't realize catskills had ski mountains, but at the same distance as Gore, might choose Gore. Seems to be a fan favorite.

I appreciate the plug! Definitely considering buying land and building. Useful info!
Catskill way closer than Gore and 4 mtns there that outshine GPk. Also could day trip from there to Gore (and one Catskill Mt shares pass with Gore). If there is a lake to your liking around there I would do that.

Gotta watch ya don’t get hit by one of those Amish buggies if yer hiking roadsides.

The Amish are actually very safety conscious.
