Michigan Conditions

I listed to Stuart's podcast with the Nub's Nob GM today. He noted that given the way snowmaking happens, usually there are five front-side trails that end up ready at the same time.

Three or so of those runs are the ones they are making snow on their web cam right now. Nubs has around 1.3 snow guns per skiable acre and that is off a little because they also have glades that do not have snow making on it, I would bet it closer to 1.5 guns per acre of non glade terrain

The stats on the Nubs website says 248 acres, 97% snowmaking, and 315 snowguns.

OMG . . . found a video from over a decade ago about snowmaking at Nubs. During the interview, one point made was that anyone who wanted to be a groomer had to be a snowmaker first.

I was surprised to learn in the podcast that they are still using the same home grown snowguns from decades ago. The GM explained why it makes more sense since those snowguns work very well and are very easy to maintain.

Found another old Nubs video that shows snowguns pumping out loads of snow in early December 2011. They were doing weekly "webcasts" back then.

Ski Brule announced on their website that they will be open Nov. 19-20. Sounds as if after the weekend they will focus on snowmaking and not run lifts for a few days but plan to be open for Thanksgiving.

Lutsen has been clear about their early season schedule for a while. No changes needed in the last few weeks.

Nubs has some of if the not the best grooming and manmade snow I have skied on. I will also give Mt Holly a honorable mention for manmade snow quality, Holly's problem is being in SE Michigan they get hit with the the freeze cycle too much.

Early in the season Caberfae decided not to be open during the week so they could concentrate on making snow. With the recent rain and warm weather it looks like that is paying off now.
