As of 12/15, the new rental pumping system at the pond is working and we are running water though the lines up the mountain! Of course it’s a bit too warm in the mid-30s to make snow, but when the temps do drop, after the storm rolls through, we will be making snow. Thanks to our operations crew for getting this done and creatively overcoming this obstacle at the snowmaking pond. As we will not have any man-made snow for this weekend, we will see what this snowstorm brings on Friday and Saturday, let all of the storm fall, and if we have enough (15″+), then we will take a crack at opening the ski area on Sunday. This will also give mountain operations time to clear and prepare parking lots, lifts ramps (with no man-made snow), finish up items on Red Chair, groom an option or two for less advanced skiers/riders, and for ski patrol, to determine what trails can be opened with only all-natural snow. For some upper mountain trails to get open it would take approximately 15″ plus, with some denser snow. So if we can safely open, it will most likely be Sunday which will also allow Vermont roads to be cleared as well for our travelers and staff. East Side terrain should be open from the top and perhaps some West Side trails depending on what we get by Saturday . Just have to see how the storm plays out. NWS Albany has us in the 12-18″ range now. If it’s 18″, it will be fun on Sunday with the full storm accumulation in.
THE MOUNTAIN IS CLOSED TO UPHILL TRAVEL UNTIL CHRISTMAS WEEK FOR SNOWMAKING OPERATIONS TO BEGIN.
Cold weather seems to be looking pretty good through the Christmas holiday, so winter is looking real finally and it’s time to plan to be at Magic over the holidays.
