I appreciate people who are glass-half-full about skiing (I certainly strive to be within reason) and props to Harv for anticipating this line of questioning 11 years ago with his disclaimer. That said; you can't have it both ways -- exhibit unrelenting enthusiasm ("if you choose to use my reports to make ski decisions for yourself, please analyze carefully") and then claim that you created this site for the most part to help people make more informed decisions about where and when they ski.

You are confused or misinformed.

The front page has nothing to do with helping people make decisions. It's about telling stories sharing excitement and giving exposure to favorite ski areas.

Got it?
A bit defensive aren't we, Harv?

No. There is nothing about NYSB I have to defend. In my own opinion, it's awesome.

James has been beating that drum for a decade, and I'm weary of it.

The original disclaimer was after I got some push back for this post. People felt I was being too positive:

Here are some snippets from that piece:

"rocks skis"
"questions about snowmaking remain"
"crust busting on Twin Fawns"
"Chatiemac was borderline bulletproof in all the steepest sections"
"things are getting thinner by the minute"
"a mixture of packed snow, crust with a few inches of powder on top of rocks, and twigs"
"it just got too thin"
"Lies was now closed. That was the right move"
"Surprising continued lack of snowmaking"
"We need new snow. There is some in the forecast, but it doesn’t look like enough"

Is that a sugarcoating?

I ended with this, which was the source of the pushback:

"I’ve got to be honest, I still had a great time. Based on conversations I heard, I could tell that people were not having the fun that I was."

The next day I wrote the disclaimer. The key line is this:

"Do not mistake my enthusiasm for a positive review of conditions."

In fairness I was defensive then. Now I don't give a rats ass and I only think about it now when James brings it up.

QUESTIONS

Is anybody here really reading the front page to decide where to ski?

Who reads the front page regularly? For those who do, why do you read it?

I'll take that as I no.

The most fun part of that whole thing was Hawkeye. You had to ski it to get to the Chatiemac glades, and the headwall was a mixture of bedrock and ice. But once you got below and into the trees it was relatively decent. It had been hugely windy and that was were the snow was.

I was really an intermediate then and I couldn't get down the headwall. By the middle of the afternoon I was lapping it, by siding down the headwall on my ass.

Start your own blog and look for failure in everything. I'm creating my own memories, and I like them happy.

No. I don't know how you could use this info just by itself for a decision, unless you had enough time and cash to gamble. Weather, conditions, bookings.....too many variables.

Perspective. Pictures. Rest of the internet is boring.

Ya must be really be happy in them powdered trees, if ya gotta ass-slide a bedrock-iced headwall to get to the goods, just sayin.

If I was more like normal people, this site would be a lot different. Or maybe n'existe pas.

Nope

This year my biggest decision was to go or not go to either Lab and/or Song.
“Front page" gives interesting stories on places, so it can help.

Read it all. It has fun stories and nice pics.
